Portland report says Howard Latourette former Democratic national committeeman urged Democrats to support Senator Guy Cordon calling his opponent a phony Democrat. He urged loyal Democrats and independents to vote for Cordon to oppose liberal influences.
Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Myrtle Crest school on Thursday October 21 from 1:30 to 5:00 pm. Mrs Jack Dunn and Mrs John Heeren lead the drive and aim for 100 pints. Donors are urged to pre register at Sempert’s Drugstore Myrtlewood Bakery or by phone.
Mrs Henry Rosslow and Mrs LaFlamme left early this week for Eugene to spend several days. The trip is for rest and sightseeing and they planned to return later this week.
Oregon voters face Initiative 6 to repeal standard time and adopt daylight time. Backers include Portland Chamber groups while opponents are Oregon Grange and Farmers Union. Past votes showed a narrow margin with 277,633 for standard time and 295,319 against.
Henry A Schroeder and Sons announce a Knit King knitting demonstration at their store on October 21 and 22. The event highlights achieving 4 000 stitches in a short time and finishing a sweater in about three hours, appealing to both beginners and seasoned knitters.
The Myrtle Point Bobcats lost 26 to 13 to Bandon, with heavy Tiger propulsion early and a late Bobcats surge. Joe Martinka led Myrtle Point deep drives, Bruce Whitaker returned a key kickoff for a TD, and Ashton sealed the win for Bandon. The JV tied North Bend 6 to 6, as Myrtle Point prepares for North Bend Bulldogs next.
Myrtle Point Lutheran Church hosts Mission Emphasis Sunday on Oct 17 at 1 am with Vicar Paul Thiele a Concordia College instructor from New York City teaching in Portland Interviewed at service end will be two Concordia College coeds Nancy Meyer from Myrtle Point among them Mission boxes will be used by SS children and a special offering supports the church's 48 states four countries and 24 foreign stations TV program featured on 226 stations and the public is invited.
The Coos County school census will begin October 25 and include all youths aged 4 to 19. Last year the census counted 14,708, with growth expected this year though precise gains are hard to predict.
Don's Union Service Station at 8th and Spruce Myrtle Point unveils a modern face lifting. Proprietor Don Bunyard explains a full equipment update and blacktopped grounds with free pickup and delivery. The station offers Union gasoline grease oils Firestone tires batteries and aims to provide auto and truck service seven days a week from 7 am to 10 pm.

Five high school seniors in Southwest Oregon will receive $200 scholarships funded by a special Scholarship Day on October 16. One cent from every gallon of gasoline sold will go to the fund. Last year winners included Donald Martin, Carole Kennedy, Ervin Royer, John Flaxer, and Earl Pajari. Tom W Burke chairs the drive urging motorists to fill up.
Ground Observers sponsor a two night Funnybone Follies revue at Myrtle Crest school October 2 and 22 to benefit teen-age clubs. A King and Queen of Toyland contest featuring local preschoolers offers one cent voting. six finalists will be introduced October 21 with coronation the next day. Voting jars, entrant photos, and standings will appear in the Myrtle Point Herald. entries due by October 22.
Dr QO H Clarke of Myrtle Point was indicted by a Coos County grand jury for performing an illegal operation on Mrs. Jack Keifer who died at St Joseph hospital Eureka California. Clarke was arrested, released on $5,000 bail, and the case ties to the state board of medical examiners and District Attorney John Picketts office in Coquille.
In Portland the report argues tax cuts reduce liability while dollar stability preserves purchasing power. It notes federal tax reductions near 7.5 billion, a northwest saving of 266 million, and a 12 cent dollar since 1938 with prices flat since 1953. The piece claims inflation has not eroded dollar value and urges continued stability.
Colonel Earle L Osborne formerly of Myrtle Point Oregon will depart this month for Guam with the 92nd Bomb Wing at Fairchild AFB near Spokane Washington for training. Upon return he will join the 14th Air Division at Travis AFB California likely in December. He became director of operations for the 82nd Bombardment Wing last December and was promoted to full colonel on June 15. Fairchild is a Strategic Air Command base. the 92nd Wing flies B 36 aircraft. Osborne is the brother of Mrs Harold Belloni of Myrtle Point and his mother is Mrs Ray L Beckett of Springfield Oregon.
Mrs. Clarence Barton announces that Richard and Roberta Neuberger will visit Myrtle Point Friday at 10 30 a m to share coffee with locals. Neuberger will present a copy of Adventure in Politics to the library via Mayor Jack Dunn. The event is described as non political an opportunity for residents to meet the couple.
James A. Norman a Coos Bay attorney and Republican candidate for the state legislature spoke at the McKinley Grange Saturday urging support for US Senator Guy Cordon and US Representative Harris Ellsworth. He credited the Eisenhower program’s success to strong congressional backing and noted club chairman Ted Pettersen presiding.
The First Methodist church with the National Council of Churches observes Laymen's Day on Sunday October 17. John Rhodes leads the service with participation from Ann Kellogg Carol Porter Gareth Goodard Milton Schroeder and Bruce Whitaker. The theme for Laymen's year is A Time of Decision.
