Myrtle Points cannery now operates two shifts with a modern can sealing machine that handles 60 cans a minute. Over 12 000 cans of peas stored, expected to reach 42 000 by week end. A growers meeting discussed financing and marketing as the industry grows in the region.
The Myrtle Point Athletic Club debuts Saturday evening with an open house at 8 30 in the Strong building corner Fourth and Maple. Dick Eckert promotes and coaches boxing. Robert Waring serves as manager. First bouts set for Monday October 10 at 3 o clock featuring Jack Farmer versus Tony Camden in an eight round main event.
Josephus Lett of Myrtle Point Oregon died late Wednesday following complications from appendicitis and gallbladder surgery. Born March 22 1867 in Heamas Valley he lived in this area his entire life and was a longtime Myrtle reconge member. Survived by widow Elza Beth Lett a son Leshop a daughter Dorme two sisters Fre dry Hoot and Mrs Sarah Williams and a brother William Funeral arrangements not yet announced.
In Coquille a recent meeting of the County Division O. B. S. T. A. executive committees appointed nominating, resolutions, auditing and powers committees. The county institute will be held at Marshfield on October 14 with Miss Olga Christenson as chair of the nominating committee and other named members from Marshfield Myrtle Point Coos River Catching Inlet Riverton Bandon and Coquille.
Arline Helliwell of Eden Valley school becomes the county’s first teacher to join the NFA 8TA and the county division of all three organizations. She sent dues to the county superintendent before starting the Eden Valley school year. Other teachers are quickly joining, with hopes for many 100 percent schools by the designated time.
The 9 months old son of Mr and Mrs Jock Roberts of Catching Creek died at 5 pm Tuesday after a month long illness. An abscess of the brain caused death. Survived by parents and a six year old sister. Born December 14 1931. Open air funeral was held Wednesday at 2 pm at Catching Creek Cemetery with Rev E V Ostrander officiating.
The Royal Neighbors met Monday in their hall to arrange a social event at the next Verulay meeting. A party for all Neighbors and families is planned with Danford Mast and Louise Lemon in charge of entertainment.
The Coquille band announced a Rich magic show at the Community Building on October 14. Rich, acclaimed by Thurston as the sole successor, will perform a locally arranged engagement with the Wagitian presenting the act.
The Ladies Aid of the Methodist Episcopal church will hold a cooked fonda sale at Spruce Meat Market on Saturday the 8th at 10 o clock. Due to the sudden illness of Pastor Egg Ranton the Unit Assembly meeting planned for this evening at the church has been postponed to a later date.
J Herman Radabaugh son of Mr and Mrs J H A Radabaugh of Eugene marries Miss Helen Bock of Boise Idaho The couple with ties to Arago and Fishtrap plan to reside in Portland Radabaugh grew up in the Eugene area attended local schools and later the University of Oregon where he earned a degree
A Dodge truck owned by Sandy Weekly and driven by Wilford Laird broke through a weak Mooring at the Coquille river foot of Spruce street Monday night around seven. The left rear wheel dropped to the axle as a two inch plank failed, halting traffic for hours.
Readable sections list awards in horses cattle sheep goats poultry and more from the 21st annual Cops and Curry County Fair held in Myrtle Point. Winners include C B Watson Albert Powers Dwight L Nash Martin Lassen and others across breeds and classes.
A district meeting of the A F and A M will be held in Coquille October 16 honoring the birth of George Washington. Speakers include Frank Peters grand orator of Oregon and L A Liljeqvist of Coque, focusing on Washington’s life with Andr P Davis present. All Masons are invited.
A special Eastern Star meeting is called for Monday night October 10. Mr. Anna Ellis of Garbaldi, worthy grand matron, will pay an official visit to the Myrtle Point lodge. All members and visiting members are invited to attend.
Dr R H Mast left the hospital at 4 pm to aid a patient injured in a forest fire in Eden Valley district. He traveled 26 miles on foot and horseback over eight hours and reached the patient at 7 the next evening. Luther Adams, 28, of Powers, was struck by a 19 inch snag and suffered a fractured pelvis and vertebra. He was carried 14 miles on a stretcher to the railroad, then to Myrtle Point hospital, as Dr Mast reported seeing 15 deer along the route.
Lions clubs from across the county convened in Myrtle Point last Thursday with Senator Steiner in attendance delivering a humorous brief address. The gathering discussed civic projects, club benefits, meeting procedures, and entertainment highlights.
Myrtle Point council and budget committee met at city hall Monday night. E C Barker was sworn in to fill the vacancy left by Dave McNair. The group heard about the Myrtle Point Athletic Club gym and arena plans and debated boxing tax levels. The budget committee then voted to cut city salaries and expenses, with the final budget to be published in the Herald next issue.
A Monday accident injures two firefighters after a tree toppled onto their crew while fitting at the Lead of Florde creak. Carl Bushnell of Catching Creek suffers a broken shoulder and Walter Danville of Myrtle Point has a fractured skull. Ambulance reached within two miles of the scene then transported them to Mest hospital.
At the regular monthly Library board meeting the librarian reported September lending totals: Adult 945, Children 109, State 238, for a total of 1 082. Fines earned 1.00, paid books 2.20, overall 5.31. Eighteen new cards were issued.
