Seventy-one men from Marshfield North Bend Coquille and Myrtle Point attended a Coquille Ninety and Nine club meeting with twelve first-time attendees. The program included violin solos by Frederick Dallas and Ruth Towne’s song Where Jesus Walked. Rev F H Barr of the Church of the Brethren spoke on I Could Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthened Me. A men’s quartet closed with Seeking the Lost.
The county Methodist Men's Brotherhood held a Monday evening dinner gathering at North Bend with about 50 attendees. Wm. Baker of the Coos Bay Times spoke on the present war situation. Attendees from Myrtle Point included Rev T J Pryor, Milton Schroeder, L P Linn, Dr. O. H. Clarke, KB. A. Dodge, with Mr Leavy from Arago. The next meeting is planned for Myrtle Point on January 16.
Thirteen Powers grade students and their teacher J Verne Laswell toured the Herald plant in Myrtle Point last Thursday to watch newspaper production. The visit was welcomed by Herald staff and included demonstrations of printing and publishing processes amid travels by Mr. wate H. N Crowley of Oregon and Bob Farley from Oklahoma.
The Coos County Ministerial Association gathered in Coquille for an all day meeting. Rev F W Barr presided and Rev Hugh T Mitchelmore led the devotional. Elmer Rosenkilde spoke on Can Christianity Save Civilization and Wm Burgoin lectured on Bible lands and habits. Plans were laid to cooperate with Portland churches for a county wide Preaching Mission and ministers from Myrtle Point attended.
Coos county farmers in the Agricultural Conservation program for 1940 have used about 400 tons of Treble Superphosphate, 45 percent phosphorus acid, across 755 farms averaging 500 pounds per farm. Lime use is extensive for soil fertility with over 700 tons likely by November, aided by ground shell from Coos Bay and Coquille river material, while seeding grasses and legumes is hindered by weather. Farmers with unearned allowances can obtain lime without cash payment.
Thirty six residents completed petitions for United States citizenship in Coos County following renewed emphasis on naturalization. Mrs Wilton James came home Thursday after a two month trip to Pittsburg Pa to see her son W B James a foreman in a steel mill. She also visited daughter Mrs Sandy Congdon in Klamath Falls and son Clifton James in Malin. She toured Niagara Falls Washington DC and Mt Vernon VA noting mills run three shifts daily with strong orders and production.
