The plan to merge Marshfield and North Bend into one city called Coos Bay failed after a campaign by the Times and COOS radio station. North Bend voted 1079 against and 186 for, Marshfield 776 for and 146 against, while in the 1900 foot intermediate segment the measure lost 12 to 11.
Broadbent grange members publish excerpts from letters from soldiers at Fort Bragg and overseas. Other items note a new Union high school director, moves of residents to Portland and Eugene, a ranch purchase by R C Parker, and Dr. F Beer being called for induction into the army as a first lieutenant.

Last week a two year old girl Beverly Odetheen died in a crib fire after her mother briefly left their two room cabin to check the mail box. A six month old infant survived with burns and shock, later discharged from Belle-Knife hospital. Funeral services were held in Coquille with burial there. Two year old male bears about 250 pounds each were trapped Monday at the Powell Lancaster place and brought to town by Clarence Mallang government trapper. A second bear was found in a trap after hearing a ball in the timber. One bear was previously taken last week, with a mother and another cub still at large. Lancaster wonders if the bears have harmed his sheep as he reports 21 head of sheep fed to bears.
Mr and Mrs Robert Thompson relocated last Saturday to the T Johnson place off Gravelford road formerly owned by the Frank Freemans. Here Over Weekend Stanley Phillips and family from Reedsport spent the weekend with his wife and daughter Earla. Visits Mother Mrs Jesse Coleman of Klamath Falls visits her mother Mrs Ida Roland in Gravelford.
