Edward Huntley, 74, committed suicide Saturday morning, triggering funeral arrangements to be held Tuesday. The death occurred early Saturday and is being investigated as a self-inflicted incident.
Ed Roberts, local real estate agent, was not injured in a Thursday evening collision near Myrtle Point. His car crossed the center line and struck another vehicle, resulting in three cracked ribs for the other driver and minor injuries to the other occupant. Roberts spent a night away from home for observation.
Armed Forces day events in Myrtle Point honor G O C with a 1 pm parade starting at 8th and Race 28th, marching to Spruce, including Boy Scouts, bands, and community groups, followed by a dedication ceremony and potluck dinner led by Rev Edward Mc Clurg.
Harvard University honors Charlie Bingham and other seniors from Oregon on the honor roll as they prepare to receive diplomas. The special report notes Bingham’s achievement alongside fellow graduates from the class of graduates who earned high academic standing.
The Citizens' High School committee met at McKinley School Friday to discuss the High School District No 2 expansion. Milford Mast presided as Ralph Whitaker outlined the committee's formation and findings. The current building, sized for 236, houses 385 students, and eighth graders will swell the future class. Pacific Power and Light President Paul B. McKee told a Coos Bay district dinner that Coos County holds some of the Northwest’s most promising industrial opportunities. He cited wood processing growth, shipping facilities, wood waste conversions, untapped raw materials, and a $150,000 program to develop an industrial water supply. He noted merger benefits and ongoing construction to meet rising power demand, with plans for a new service counter and increased capacity in the Coos County area.
Harold Watzling, secretary, says the Myrtle Point Sportsmen's club aims to finish their clubhouse within 30 days and invite public inspection. The baseball field will be graded as weather allows for Pee-Wee season opening. Bill Church won his third leg for permanent possession in the Jim Morris trophy shoot with 4 points, 24 of 25 targets in the shoot-off. An off week follows as members compete at the Coquille Active club at Arago airport grounds.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Lee Ray Post 2936 Veterans of Foreign Wars conducts a Buddy Poppy sale to honor deceased veterans. The event runs May 21 and 22 with support from local and regional veterans organizations in Maton Michigan area.
Two men were recovered from Baker Creek after drowning incidents. Authorities noted the deaths are being treated as accidental. The names and ages of the victims have not been released pending notification of relatives.
