The 1947 Oregon legislature enacted 589 laws including 105 with emergency clauses. Governor Snell vetoed 12 measures, one overridden. a referendum drive gathers signatures to put the law to voters. Proponents claim it harms public ownership of electric plants while private utilities oppose its progress.
The county W C T meeting in Coos Bay will be held next Tweeday at the Methodist church. It starts at 10 30 am with a pot luck dinner at noon and will feature Mrs Etta White state secretary as a guest. All section members are urged to attend. Groundwork is laid this week for the Carter home at Fifth and Maple streets.
Mobile X-Ray unit arrives in Coos County next Thursday and Friday May 22 and 23 with focus on adults and high school upper grades. Younger children with TB symptoms are urged to apply for examination. mass family exams not possible. Representatives from several Coos area cooperative marketing associations met Tuesday May 13 to discuss organizing a cooperative feed and farm supply association to operate at the chrome plant on the Coquille Coos Bay highway. The plant, bought from the government by the Coquille Dairy Co op, with other groups support, is now being analyzed for rent and operation. Attending groups included Coquille Valley Dairy Co op at Bandon Arago Cooperative Cheese Assn Coos Curry Feed Co op and Coca County Marketing Assn Inc. Additional associations in the county will be invited to the next meeting planned for late May.
Union High School board president Paul E. Brewer reported a budget hike for the coming year due to higher costs in salaries and operations. The budget was approved after discussion by budget chair Walter Newberry and members including Mrs. Eldon Brodie, John Carman, Rodney Davenport, and Harold Clarno.
The Mobile chest X-ray unit will visit Powers on Wednesday May 21 from 1 to 9 PM. The free screen is offered by the Oregon Tuberculosis Ass'n and the county Health Ass'n. Women are asked to come in the afternoon, with men in the evening, and signups occur at the Post Office Sheedy's store or Camwell's store.
Six Powers High School seniors will receive diplomas at graduation in the school gym Friday night May 23 announced by superintendent B R Nicklaus. The graduating class includes Dorothy Whet Donald Slyter Alan Claire Baker and others. Nicklaus noted the class is among the smallest in the school’s history and that next year’s class is expected to be small with 26 freshmen.
The Myrtle Point Junior Women’s Club announces a Senior Ball honoring Union High School’s senior class. It will be at Oaks Pavilion on Saturday night May 24, with Whally Heider and his seven piece University of Oregon dance band performing from 9:30 to 12:38. The hall will feature silver and white decor and the motto Looking To World Horizons.
