The notice explains wartime rationing starting March 20 with red stamps from book two and 16 points per week for four weeks. It lists item classes and point values from 12 to 1 per pound, notes change-making, and lists items not rationed such as poultry and fresh fish.
Two senior high students Miss Ann Anderson and Miss Marie Swan will address the Senior Women's club Monday at 2 00 p m at city hall. They will discuss Peace In the Pacific and Mistakes to Avoid in the Coming Peace Conference followed by a forum. A glee club group will sing with Miss deBoer performing an accordion solo. The meeting includes plans for a $10 000 luncheon on April 24 at the Chandler hotel in Marshfield.
A high school play The Dorm itory Dub and a box social are set for Arago school gym this Saturday evening at 8 00. The 40 minute performance precedes a box lunch auctioned by ladies with supper and a partner for the bid.
Oregon Women's Ambulance Corps seeks affiliation with State Guard. Myrtle Point platoon under Lieut Ora Johnson drills weekly near Remote. Plans call for a 24 to 36 member unit in Myrtle Point with Capt John Farley and staff assisting recruiting.
A program of music and folk dances will feature the Spring Festival at the Union High School auditorium Friday evening. Children from the grade and Junior High schools will perform with the Union High band providing music. Various groups and individuals will take part and a pageant in song "American Grown With Song" will be presented. The Junior High band will also participate.
Missionary to Alaska Charles Railaback will lead the Church of Christ evening service at 7:80 Sunday. He just returned from five years in Ketchikan sharing with whites and natives and will discuss Alaska war effects on missions. The event is open to the community.
Letters from servicemen recount postings in Washington California and New Guinea. John Cooper tells friends he is “Graffty” stationed at Camp Lewis. Denver Greer returns to duty on a light cruiser. Mrs Greer plans to stay in Myrtle Point. Robert Belloni reports arriving back at camp in good order. Phillip Reed transfers to Oakland training as a ground mechanic. Readers thank the Myrtle Point Herald and Chamber of Commerce for their papers and support while overseas. Corresponden t notes include notes from Ernest and Leo Williams in New Guinea and Africa.
Mrs Emma Hermann of Broad Bend hosts a reunion with her sister Mrs Lilly Dement visiting from Ontario. They spend a day with Mrs Bertie McCloskey of Norway and are joined by other sisters and relatives from Marshfield and Marshfield area. The gathering features shopping and shared time with family.
Mayor Jesse D. Clinton reports fewer complaints from gardeners about stray dogs and says citizens cooperate well with enforcing the anti dog ordinance. The city aims to curb canine population during the spring season and keep streets clear of free roaming dogs.
The preliminary test for V-12 Navy officer candidates will be held at Myrtle Point Union High School from 9:00 to 11:00 Friday April 2. Eligible applicants include high school seniors graduates and college students who meet age requirements and show potential for officer training while on active duty and in uniform.
Mr and Mrs Sig Eckholm of Coaledo report their son Oke Eckholm seriously wounded in action with the army in Africa. Oke attended Coquille high school and USC forestry, formerly with the California forestry department. He is brother to Mrs Ellis Southmayd of Pleasant Point. Earl Eckholm in U S Army Air Corps believed stationed in India.
The Myrtle Point community raised 321.59 for the annual Christmas seal sale campaign led by the Junior Woman's club. The drive ran from November 24 to March 1, with county totals reaching 8,650.16, the highest ever reported, per county chairman Mrs. John Graham. Local contributions: Broadbent 40.60, Bridge 46.68, Powera 111.31.
The senior class will present the annual play Brother Goose on April 30 with a cast of 10 cents. The interclass basketball contest ended last Friday at noon, with the senior team winning. Freshmen took second place and sophomores third.
Eighth grade pupils in the Union high school district observe an annual event called 6th grade day. Principal L P Linn presides over interclass speaking while a track meet is scheduled for 2 30 PM on the athletic field.
Extension bulletin 617 covers eastern Oregon small fruits and bulletin 618 addresses western Oregon homesteads. The bulletins revise earlier mimeographs and emphasize that strawberries bear in the next year, with some varieties maturing later. bear fruit primarily in the third and following years.
Farmers may schedule 1948 crops with assurance of gasoline for truck operations as fuel supplies permit. Herman C. Sites of the Portland district Office of Defense Transportation says the mileage control program is flexible and farm requests for certification adjustments can be made to USDA county war boards. appeals proceed through farm transportation committees to ODT offices, with final appeal to regional manager. Emergency rationing remains available during reviews.
Mr and Mrs E Barker came back last Saturday after ten days in Spokane and other points north. They reported quite a bit of undis closed weather and mountainous travel between here and there. The Barkers drove home with stories of the trip.
Report notes that after a Monday meeting of the Civilian Defenses the group adjourned to a cafe where lunch was served. The scene describes informal discussions and a social finish to the gathering.
