Tink Hatfield, former Bobcat star from Myrtle Point High, earned top honors with Pacific University for the season. He led in Freshman basketball scoring with 159 points in 16 games, just missing a 10 point per game average, and tallied 61 field goals and 37 free throws. Hatfield, son of Mr and Mrs H A Hatfield of Bridge, faced 50 fouls.
Girl Scout Troop No. 2 met March 13 at the Methodist church social rooms under Mrs Howard Whitaker Mrs H Thomas and Mrs Paul Mammer. Officers elected President Shirley Tobey Secretary Jolene Moyes Treasurer Carl Porter Press Reporter Mary Jo Schroeder. Troops formed into six member patrols with leaders Arlene Aasen Alice Hammer and assistants Maxine McElwain Shirley Tobey.
The State Highway Commission has a crew at work this week repairing and black topping a half mile of state highway in the east end of Myrtle Point. The effort will improve the road and make it more pleasant to drive.
Old Man Steck notes spring fever as signs bloom while a new citizen arrives at Mast hospital. The infant, a boy, was born Thursday March 8 to Mr and Mrs Albert A Van Camp of Bridge Route Myrtle Penn.
Officers and directors of the Coca-Curry Pioneer Association met March 11 in the Coquille Community building. Mrs Ralph Stephens presided as president and A N Gould led the session with Mrs Ines R Chase reporting 1000 plus members and full 1949 dues. The museum's guest book logged 3 514 visitors and new articles were noted. A history committee was expanded and a plan for a permanent fireproof museum building was begun. The next officers meeting is March 28 in the Coquille Hotel at noon.
Work has begun on abutment preparation for the new Spruce Street bridge over the Coquille river in West Myrtle Point. EFE Philpott contractor leads a crew with Martin Kincherloe operating a power drag line shovel. The bridge, funded by federal funds and supervised by the State Highway Commission, will cost about $155000 and is slated for completion around September 1.
Thornton Tire Service in Point announces a sporting goods grand opening next Saturday at 8 am. The store will feature fishing and hunting gear, reels, rifles and shotguns, and sports equipment from brands like Goodrich, U S Royal tires, Evinrude, Winchester, Remington, and more. Customers on opening day receive a free gift while supplies last.
County coaches have not yet formed a unified all-star team for district three. The honor roll includes standout players such as Bingham and others, with selections noted by the sports writer.
The Myrtle Point High Junior Class will present the three act comedy Miss Jimmy at the high school auditorium on March 30 and 31. Under the direction of Mr Burrows sophomore English teacher the cast includes Louise Pegay Kincheloe Florence Vera Pickett Jimmy Charlie Bingham Katherine Barbara Shull Doris Evelyn Hall Harriett Karen Barklow Dorothy Bill Davenport Prof Frazier Phill Mast. The plot follows a girls college prank where Jimmy is forced to steal a dress. the girls capture him for ransom. Tickets available from Junior class members.
Woodruff asserts President Truman earns an extraordinary take home pay of 110000 yearly, with tax-free 5000. lists 42 travel and entertainment facilities including 35 White House autos and the yacht Williamsburg. He cites staff payrolls, travel allowances, and luxury upgrades to a fleet of cars and secretaries arriving by car, claiming Truman surpasses Roosevelt and Hoover in perks and services.
Myrtle Point school board Dietrie 41 C has invited bids for a new elementary school building approved by voters last year. Bids are due by 8 pm April 10 1950 with plans and contract documents available from Paul Franzen or R J Keeney in Medford Oregon. Construction aims to finish before the fall term opening September 1 with work to start after contract letting. Board members present at the Monday meeting included Metta Rosslow Geo Hoffman Howard Whitaker Frank Meldrum and Paul Franzen.
V A Roush buys Perry C Roper Garage on Fourth and Spruce in Myrtle Point and takes over today. Roper retains Standard Oil offices. Mrs Clinard Mast handles office work. Roush plans improvements and official opening set for Saturday April 1.
A school election is scheduled for April 4 from 2 to 8 p m to decide withdrawing portions of District No 11 Parkersburg and District No 210 Randolph, formerly District 1. The Boundary Board fixed the voting window.

Republicans face Morse opponents and new filings by Dave Hooper of Sadwood Lane County. Other Democratic hopefuls include Latourette and Wood for governor with McKay unopposed. Senate races attract incumbents and new candidates as long-serving lawmakers weigh future.
The Twin Oaks Dairy Club announces a Friday program featuring Bill Davenport Skeepresteest Shirley Davenport and Kay Hall secretary. A reporter and the wonton band Larsen are mentioned. Next meeting to be held at James Trigg's residence.
Judge Dal M. King of the circuit court will be the featured speaker at Myrtle Point post American Legion's founding celebration Saturday evening March 18 at 7 38 PM. The meeting honors veterans of World Wars I and II and invites all veterans their wives and other guests. Refreshments cake and coffee provided per commander Frank Henry.
Ralph Whitaler, a Myrtlewood city council member, says he will not run for mayor this fall and prefers to serve on the council. Norwood Browne, another potential candidate and current council member, declined to comment. Austin Dodge, former councilman and Hiland Theatre proprietor, says he would consider a bid if there is popular demand.
