Gaylord resident James McWilliams, Sth class technician in the Bnd U S Armored Division, reports from Europe aboard a unit called Hell on Wheels. The division fought in 10 countries across Africa Europe and the Western Front from 1942 to 1944, including D-day in France and the Battle of the Bulge. McWilliams suffered a frozen toe but remains safe as maps of the unit’s travels are displayed in Gaylord.

Wilbur A. Lewis from Powers Oregon has joined Col Albert J Shewer's 467th Bomb Group as radio operator on a B 24 Liberator. The unit has flown 165 bombing missions against enemy targets in Europe. Lewis, a Powers High School graduate and former logger, enlisted Sept 22 1941 in Portland and was stationed at Westover Field before combat duty.

Waterman Receives Distinguished Flying Cross While Missing in Action
Mrs Grace I Jewett of Bridge reports her brother 2nd Lt David Waterman has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with oak leaf clusters for extraordinary achievement as navigator of a B 24 during a 18 April 1944 bombing mission over Hungary. He is believed prisoner in Germany, with medals to be presented by an officer chosen by the Ninth Service Command. He earned the honors for leadership under adverse conditions and successful bombing despite inoperative instruments and heavy antiaircraft fire. He also earned meritorious achievement for operational activities from Jan 18 to May 1944.
