A Wall Street Journal clipping described by Wayne Carver of Pasadena outlines Olin Industries duck and pheasant hunts. Pheasants are released to feed a four hunter party with a guide over 100 acres. costs cited as $2500 per hunter for four birds with disputes over bird allotments.
An eye catching travel column recounts a near head on collision south of Ashland when a car veered into the narrator’s lane. The Model T rolled and toppled but the author escaped unharmed, praising a guardian angel and detailing the wrecked vehicle and crowd reaction.
The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club reports a successful first night shoot with sixty five shooters and wives attending a social evening. An additional Friday night shoot is planned July 1 at 8 p m with hopes for more lights. An archery class led by Henri Burr Coquille begins June 30 at 8 p m open to all ages.
The morning summer recreation program will continue at Myrtle Crest School under director Mr Charles Humble. For July 5 through 15 the schedule lists ages 4 to 8 from 10 to 11 a.m., ages 9 to 11 from 11 to 12, tennis for 12 and older, and 2:30 to 4 p.m. activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays plus crafts at the Scout building on some days.
Elmer Hamrick 45 was instantly killed Friday around 10 am as a log snag struck him during logging operations on Elk Creek near Dora. His body was taken to Schroeder Mortuary and services were held Tuesday. He lived in Myrtle Point eight years and in Bondon eight months, survived by his wife Agnes and eight children.
Salem June 25 completion of appointments of department superintendents for the 1955 Oregon State Fair has been announced. Fair dates are September 3 through 10 in Salem. Appointments include Edna Altman Calem textiles Mrs James H Turnbull foods Mrs C H Rundell art Mrs Jack Bartlett floral John Davis Salem honey bees and land products Kenneth Jennings Salem poultry and rabbits Edwin C Ridder Sherwood swine J J Thompson Salem sheep and goats Earl Schar Silverton draft horses Ted Hobart Salem cattle dual purpose and beef. In charge of the afternoon horse races will be Charles Evans Salem. Joe Simeral Salem will govern valid and stage operations and direct ticket sales.
Coos County Fair Board hosts a two day horse show at the fair grounds with saddle, barrel, and saddle horse races plus a big public dance July 4. Entry fees total $200 with purses up to $75 and prizes including ribbons. bands from Cedar Grove to perform and national competition prestige noted.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Henry hosted Friday guests including Mrs Richard Henry of Fort Morgan Colorado and Sie brother and family.
Myrtle Point's Oaks Pavilion at the fair grounds was dedicated Saturday evening after a major renovation. The project cost about $12,000 plus $18,000 spent on interior work, with $5,000 in donated materials from Coos county businesses. Austin Dodge led the effort, aided by Lions volunteers and county fair board support.
Union Interchurch Fellowship announces a Vacation Bible School starting Tuesday July 5 at 9 am in multiple churches. Nursery at Methods Church overseen by Mrs. Rhodes with assistants. Beginners at Presbyterian led by Mrs. Brodie and Mrs. Thompson. Primary at Christian Church under Mrs. Dickey. Junior at Church of the Brethren with Mrs. Lett. Intermediate juniors at Presbyterian led by Mrs. Galloway and others.
Thomas Richard Hazen 44 was found dead in his car Sunday morning two miles north of Myrtle Point by his brother in law and sister. Deputy Coroner and state police said death appears from a personal safety related gunshot to the forehead. He is survived by his widow Frances and five brothers.
It is likely that Mrs. Cochran and her children will be with him this week. The Cochran family may be making their final local appearance before returning to the mission field of Iraq, so the public is urged to see them while they are in town.
Steve's Food Store reopened Monday after a two week vacation break. The shop sports a redecorated interior and new equipment expected to arrive this week to improve frozen food supplies for customers.
Mrs Montgomery headlines the BPW Health and Safety meeting Thursday inviting members to attend. The event focuses on workplace welfare and safety practices with Ms Montgomery sharing tips and insights.
