Guarantors receive a fixed number of tickets to assign and must obtain them from headquarters. Ticket committees monitor sales progress to gauge public response and ensure orderly distribution during the drive.
A dynamite blast at Beckett Bros logging camp on Sandy Creek south of Myrtle Point killed Russell Yoakam Charley Christian C W Skinner and Ralph Thomas and injured others. The men stood near a tractor preparing to blow a spar pole top when the explosion occurred at about 11 AM. Relatives and authorities arranged funerals and burials in Wilbur Enchanted Prairie and Coos River cemeteries. Skinner had worked for Coos Bay Lumber Co at Powers and was a WWI veteran. Christian left a wife and three children.
Glen Olesen and his family reside at 1. G. Bingham place. Mr. Gibson, a truck driver for J. G. Bingham, was injured when his heavily loaded truck rolled over on a narrow road near Hobson place. He suffered a broken leg and other possible injuries. Mr. Bingham and his brother William were not hurt. fenders bent but trucks largely intact. Mr. Gideon was brought to Mast Wilson hospital.
Mr and Mrs Henry Schroeder accompanied by Mrs Belle Whitaker left Corvallis for Seattle for a meet with Miss Helen Whitaker who arrived from China. Miss Ethal Frasier, a former teacher here, joined the party from Corvallis. Helen arrived Saturday and the group reached Myrtle Point Sunday and then returned. Jim Whitaker and his wife from Marshfield were guests at the Schroeder home. Schroeder also visited Mrs Schreeder’s brother John Berry and family near Beattle.
Myrtle Point Bobcats defeated Cottage Grove 10 to 2 on the Cottage Grove grounds. Dickson hit a grand slam in the fourth inning driving in Manning Dement and Kruhner. Harnsberger collected two hits and Joe Mack excelled defensively. Myrtle Point leads in percentage with Eugene looming next.
Negotiations are underway to sell the Cr Carter home on Fourth Street possibly this week. Mr and Mrs Carter, residents for twenty one years, built the house and plan to move to Forest Grove Oregon to join a daughter and family. Their friends extend good wishes as they leave Myrtle Point.
The city council authorized Paul Breuer, president of Chautauqua this year, to arrange cleaning of the city park where the tent will be located. Paul, with Otto Stercks, trimmed trees and mowed grass, leaving the park in good condition and ready for the tent.
Fragments indicate an editor asking for Fourth of July material to appear in the issue. The note requests timely submission to meet the usual publishing schedule and ensure coverage.
Edward Carpenter, clerk, announced work on the new school building will begin in Remote after a late week visit. In the school election held the 17th, Russell Yorkam was elected director to replace M. J. Sullivan.
The Myrtle Point Rebekahs held their regular meeting last Monday evening. They discussed plans for the district convention to be held in Myrtle Point during the summer. Refreshments included strawberries and cream cake and lemonade. Guests from Coquille were John Lawrence and Mr. and Mrs. Bosserman and Mr. and Mrs. Getz.
A Tuesday night incident at Dad Duell's barn between Mh and 6th streets involved a youth lighting a fire with a bed sheet wrapped around old papers. Mr Reads quickly extinguished the blaze with a bucket before the fire chief arrived.
In Johns Creek district near Goofus Nest, E. C. Barker and son Cecil found a spike deer carcass likely killed by a cougar. They noted a bear later fed there, and tracks show the cougar crouched on a limb to spring on its prey. Reports of cougar cries have risen, with efforts planned to hunt with varmint dogs.
Unseelds will open in the Seaman building this Saturday offering piece goods ready-to-wear millinery and women's clothing. Trehearne manager says Coquille staff will assist with the launch and store lines include ladies furnishings millinery shoes and children’s wear.
Following the resignation of city marshal P. W. Culver Mayor Baynes appointed Bert Pearson to fill the vacancy. Pearson has been employed two months and will oversee marshal duties and the city water plant for the same salary Culver received. Culver resigned to become deputy sheriff under W. W. Gage at Coquille and will work as a field man for the county sheriff.
After failed convictions in Coquille circuit court, District Attorney Wm. E. Coleman won dismissal of three liquor cases. Dismissed defendants include Robert Y. Mathews whose trial ended with a hung jury. August Witzke, now to be tried in Portland by federal authorities. Edna Carroll, Simon Fratis, Roy Finley and Witzke again in a second indictment. Arrests were made last March in Coos county by state and federal officers. Miss Such Barton spent the week at the Verne Lundy home.
In Port Orford a coupe swerved across the highway and plunged into the river. By the time help arrived Tubbs, weighing about 260 pounds, had been pulled from the water and pronounced dead despite efforts to revive him. The crash is blamed on a gravel ridge in the road near Humbug Mountain.
Endicott returned from a week long trip to Newberg Oregon for the G A R encampment. He reported 123 old comrades in attendance and a parade day drawing several thousand townspeople who enjoyed a wonderful time. He praised Newberg residents for their generous hospitality and the extensive support given.
Rev and Mrs Howard Mishael and son Hathed of Garden City and Rev Michael conduct services at Church of the Brethren. Mrs J W Boone recalls her 18 year absence from Myrtle Point and praises town improvements as relatives visit from various locations. W W Williams hosts his brother J L Williams and family from Malaga NM for a 37 year reunion. Perkins children travel with N G W Perkins from Springfield to Yellowstone National Park after leaving Myrtle Point two months ago. Claude Moon travels with them toward California with their daughter and son in law.
Mr and Mrs Oren Beyers and daughter Gwendolyn of Rainier travel to Eugene for the University of Oregon summer session. Beyers, a Rainier school professor, is retained for another year with a substantial salary increase. Mrs Beyers is noted as the daughter of Mr and Mrs G W Barkley. Also mentioned is Mrs W G Trekeerne of Blue Lake California renting a small house on the rear of the Jet site at the former Jehu Lewellen property.
Chautauqua presents the play Skidding a comedy drama of love and politics about old maids and discontented wives. The two numbers cost 1.75 at the gate and the full program adds one dollar more.
