Franklin D. Roosevelt urges the American people to raise billions for the war and curb living costs by doubling savings and increasing stamps. He says purchases must come from current income and stresses a massive sacrifice to fund military needs without starving the home front.
Coquille to stage a full weekend July 3 and 4 celebration with eight contestants for Mini Victory, a patriotic parade, square dance contest and dances featuring Woody Hite and his orchestra. Proceeds benefit the U S O and the Coquille community hall fund.
Mr and Mrs E O Sempert witnessed a Japanese submarine attack near Seaside during a state convention. Lights facing the ocean were blacked out after flashes ten miles away were seen. Townspeople collected shell fragments, and the event prompted precautionary blackout notices while officials said no widespread panic occurred.
Young men between 18 and 20 must register next Tuesday June 30 in the fifth service enrollment. Those who have turned 20 since December 31 1941 must also sign up. Registration sites include the city hall in Coquille and the Selective Service office in Myrtle, from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
The Herald announces Mrs Arthur R Jones formerly Fairy Davis Kelemen of Los Angeles will be associate editor in charge of social and personal columns. She uses the pen name Kelly Jones and appears on the masthead this week. She has taught in Myrtle Point and Los Angeles and studied journalism at the University of Oregon.
Ira Helgerson arrives from Reedsport to establish a new shoe repair shop on South Fifth Street in the former Coffee Shop space. He previously operated a Florence repair shop for nine years and moved in this week with his machinery, planning to open within a week. He will reside in rooms behind the shop.
A new canteen work class is planned with 12 or more women signed up and 14 to 20 desired. Mrs. Howard Whitaker, the instructor, says enrollment is open to anyone over 18. The course runs 20 hours of class work with meetings two nights a week.
Myrtle Point service stations report collecting and purchasing more than 45000 pounds of old rubber in the past ten days since the government salvage program began. Last week’s total was 15000 pounds, so this week’s collection doubles that amount. Large quantities continue to come in, say station men.
The doll dance at the VFW hall by the local Oregon Women's Ambulance Corps unit drew over 400 yarn dolls sold and netted more than 200 dollars. Proceeds fund medical aid files and first aid supplies for local disaster relief.
At the annual meeting last week School District No. 41 Myrtle Point re elected director Howard Whitaker and re elected clerk Metta Rouslow. Bret was mentioned in the report as part of the election notes.
Plans for the annual supervised playground start July 6 weather permitting. Children from pre school to grammar school ages attend daily 9 to 12 at the city park with supervision. Registration is free this year. Sponsorship comes from the Lions club and the Rotary club. Last year average daily attendance was 85 with a high of 110.
Twelve pairs of gloves six turtle necked sweaters and three scarves were finished by the local group for Bundles for America and sent to the Navy collecting depot in Oakland California. The shipment was sent Monday. More yarn remains and volunteers are sought to knit helmets for service men.
The Lions Club sponsored a five week beautification contest from May 15 to June 22. Winners for rented homes were Miss Helen Karry and Mrs. Fred Mantz, with Roy Miller third. For owned homes, Harold Watzling won first, followed by J A Parrish and Mrs Annie M Lett in second and third. Judges praised yard improvements.
