Coal prospecting funds approved for Coos county

A total of 140000 is to be used to develop Coos county coal resources. Congress approved a 100000 federal grant to supplement 20000 from the county court and matched by a 20000 state contribution. The money, to be in the 1944 budget of the U S Bureau of Mines, funds drilling and exploration under a continuing survey led by state geologist Elliot Alon and engineer R S Mason.

Storage Drying Of Foods To Be Discussed

A general food preservation meeting at the Union high school agricultural building Friday at 8 o clock will cover cold storage lockers drying vegetables and fruits and the community cannery. Ted Kirsch says OSU reports warn of a serious civilian food shortage next spring if food is not preserved. Many stored foods are wasted due to improper handling but home made dryers can dry most vegetables and fruits. Anyone wanting to have plenty to eat next spring is invited to attend.

Math course added to high school requirements

Union high school will offer a unified mathematics course for upperclassmen next year. The course will be required for graduation and added to the curriculum due to war time demand. Principal L Linn attended the meeting of Oregon school principals and teachers in Salem and served on a committee shaping wartime education policies.

Bear trapper nets year and a half old black bear near Halla creek

Clarence Mullen of Arago plus companions trapped a young black bear near blackberry patches along upper Halla creek Monday evening. The same party returned with 18 gallons of blackberries while including Mr and Mrs Mullen and other locals.

Home Food Demonstration Set For 30th

Mrs Doro thy Bishop will lead a home food preservation demonstration on Wednesday June 30 at 1 30 pm in the Presbyterian church social room. The Canteen Corps sponsors will cover canning methods for non acid vegetables and meat in a pressure cooker fruit canning hot water bath and blanching for freezing or drying. Attendees may bring preserved foods for analysis and the Canteen Corps committee includes Mrs O H Peters chair Mrs Charles Goold and Mrs Wm Axe.

Former Gaylord Boy Dies In Jap Prison Camp

Pvt. Rob J M Devereaux of Hauser died in a Japanese prison camp on June 16 while held since Corrigidor fell. He attended Gaylord area schools and Mershfield High School for a year before enlisting in 1941 and serving in an artillery unit on Corrigidor. His parents Mr and Mrs Thomas Pecarecust frost Sea department learned of the death via a Red Cross wire.

Reports from Coquille Valley residents show several service members moving between posts. Martin Lindley transfers from Australia to New Guinea while Ray Cook moves from San Diego to San Francisco. Roy Cook in the Army Air Force is at Williams Field Arizona after two years in Hawaii, and Chester Cook is at a California post after Puerto Rico service. Ernest Clausen, a Broadbent native, exhibits watercolor work at a San Diego Marine base. Others include Marvin Barsee's son in the South Seas, Pvt Riley O Dever in California, and Camp Walters training for intelligence duties.

Pioneer association adopts bylaws at Coos Bay meeting

A special Coos and Curry County Pioneer association session in Coquille tentatively adopted a constitution and by laws with final action planned at the July assembly. James Watson presented Articles of Incorporation for consideration in July. Mrs. Mary Randieman presided.

Coquille Saddie Horse Show Set For July Fourth Celebrations

A saddie horse parade and show will be staged Monday July 5 as part of Coquille s Fourth of July events. Four classes include best stallion with rider and three saddle horse divisions. Prizes: 25 war bond and 10 war stamps for top three. 10 and 5 war stamps for first two in the kid class.

Young Woman Heroically Rescues Companion From River

Lucille Berry a 16 year old from Broadbent saved Clarence Lindow 18 of Coquille from drowning in the South Fork of the Coquille river. Lindow unable to swim weighed over 200 pounds and they were aided by Berry's sister Melba and Wanda Hoffmar who returned after an er rand. The rescue took place at a swimming hole near the railroad bridge by Warner farm below Broadbent.

Soldiers' Edition Delayed Awaiting Army Approval

The Soldiers' Edition of the Herald is postponed for at least another week while the Western Defense Command in San Francisco reviews publication. Newspaper leaders and local citizens agreed to secure army consent to prevent releasing service members names and addresses that could aid the enemy.

Neighbors Help Rebuild Hose Damaged by Fire

Fire destroyed the top story of the Dever residence on the hill east end of town Friday around 5 00 am. Neighbors saved laundry equipment and most personal effects though second floor contents were lost. Fire chief Marlin Evans sustained back injuries from a fall and is recovering at home. No insurance covered the building or contents.
