Retiring County Agent Recalls Forest Land Classification
A retiring county agent recalls the 1838 Coos county forest land classification that split land into timber production and grazing and agriculture. The effort aimed to exchange lands with the federal government and define ownership blocks. The project declined with rising timber prices and floods, yet laid groundwork for future resource management and water use. He retires after 33 years, praising local cooperation and naming Preg Hagelstein as successor. The agent and spouse plan a one year University of Hawaii assignment before returning to Coquille.
