Thistle insect hits Coos county areas in heat waves

Coos county reports numerous heat related infestations of Canada thistle caterpillars in Myrtle Point Broadbent and Bridge areas. Extension agent Fred Hagelstein notes two or more broods yearly and says populations cycle with years of abundance followed by decline. While the insect helps thistle control its continued abundance may be unlikely in coming years.
