Mast Hospital to Close in Myrtle Point June 15

In southwestern Oregon, Mast Hospital will close June 15 after 20 years in operation. Dr H H Thomas, owner and longtime administrator, plans to leave Myrtle Point to join the State Tuberculosis Hospital at Salem by September 1. Local residents seek a path to keep the facility open, with talks ongoing about Dr Beber returning from military service and other potential continuations.

Pioneer Merchant Visiting In M. P.

Charles E. Carl pioneer merchant of Myrtle Point travels from Pacific Grove California with his wife Mrs Carl visiting relatives and old friends from 40 years ago. They plan to go to Portland to see brother Ira W. Carr attorney. Mrs Carr is an ordained minister and radio broadcaster at KYA San Francisco and founder of the Christian Fellowship Retreat of California.

Delicious Beef Feed At Paul Breuer Ranch

A Sunday gathering at the Paul Breuer ranch on the Middle Fork enjoyed a meat feast featuring bear meat. The two year old bear trapped on Sugar Leaf by Vietor Howard had fattened on lambs and was killed before the feast. Several locals attended and, after the meal, a portion of the meat was stored while the rest was consumed on the spot.

Seventy one men aged 26 to 30 registered with the Coon Bay selective service board face speedy induction under an order received last week. The list will be pared down by exemptions not on records. Four more orders to report for induction will be sent in a few days, then cases will be reviewed.

County court listed two land sales totaling 20000 dollars with the largest 11357 dollars paid by M Nohrling J L White and Jack White doing business as Powers Mill for 980 acres in section two township 81 range 18 west. First Of Several New Stores Opened In Myrtle Point

The Southwestern Tire store opened this week in the Southwestern Motors building, selling Goodyear products and auto accessories. Phil Alborne manages the firm with Miss Ann Whekly in the office and Kenneth Talley as sale lead. The shop installs a large vulcanizing plant and seeks a local man, preferably a discharged veteran, to learn the vulcanizing trade.

Charming Coral King Snake Visits Herald Staff

A resident of Agness brings a red and black coral king snake to the Herald office claiming the species is common locally. The snake, harmless though resembling the poisonous coral snake, had spent a week in a grain sack before slithering into a back shop corner.

Schroeders Attend Upstate Meetings In Portland

Mr and Mrs Elton Schroeder spend the week in Portland area with Mr Schroeder at a Lions convention at Dorchester house and Mrs Schroeder at the Eastern Star grand lodge in Portland. They will be joined Saturday by Mr and Mrs Henry A Schroeder who travel by train to attend the timberline lodge furniture men convention and plan to return early next week.

Martin Is Fined In Circuit Court

George Albert Martin aged 69 of Riverton was fined 100 dollars in circuit court after a jury conviction for failing to render aid at an accident scene. Judge Dale King also sentenced him to 80 days in county jail, suspended on payment, linked to a crash that killed his companion Carl Morley on a highway south of Coquille.

A three day Fire Prevention School for Coos Fire Patrol association wardens and lumber and logging operation workers took place at the fire patrol headquarters in Coos Bay. Five instructors from the state forester's office conducted the sessions led by district warden Keith Young.

Contracts signed by Mack Barbour and the Myrtle Point Vaqueros set a July rodeo with Barbour’s famed buckers in Myrtle Point.
