Castro Wins All Round Cowboy Honors At Myrtle Point Rodeo

Vic Castro of Richmond California captured the top all round cowboy honors at the Myrtle Point rodeo with wins in calf roping bulldogging and cutting. The event, held July 14 and 18, drew team ropers Ralph Clarno Buckie McCall Ray Dayton and Orville Brown winning day one, while Darwin Van Leuven Don and Billy Bong led day two. Officials reported strong finances thanks to cash prizes and local support from citizens and the Lions club.

Payment Ordered In Sheep Killing

The Coon County Court ordered payment of 46 to the Coon County Sheep Company Fairview for compensation of 15 sheep killed by dogs. The court also ordered two Bangr test reactor claims each for 42 to Claude A Crewster McKinley Route and to Herman W Sumerlin Coquile.

Deed showing a sale price of 9000 dollars stamped on federal documents transfers 116.47 acres on the north fork of the Coquille river. The heirs of John Lusk Inez A. Lark Minnie Crusk and Mrs Sam Harris filed the deed Monday to J F Hob son in township 20 south range 12 west section two.

Judge King To Hear Hartfield Larceny Case In Roseburg

Circuit Judge Carl K E Wimberley disqualified himself and announced Judge King would preside over the trial of Roseburg Justice of the Peace Thomas C. Hartfield on charges of larceny of public money and malfeasance and negligence in public office. Hartfield pleaded not guilty to two and jury indictments.

Final Hearing On Coos County Non High Budget Budget Hearing

Coquille hosts a final hearing Monday July 98 at 8 pm on the non high budget prepared by the budget committee July 1. It calls for a tax levy of 10616367 to fund estimated expenditures of 141978. The board will address other matters and may accept excuses for youth not attending high school with attendance rules noted.

Coos County 4 H Teams to Compete in State and International Events

Four Coos county 4 H judging and demonstration teams will be sponsored this fall by Coos Bay Mutual Creamery Co Op Coos River Farmers Co op Arago Cooperative Cheer organization and Coquille Valley Coop. Two livestock judging teams will be chosen for competition with the first placing team entering the State Fair or Pacific International and the second entering the fair. One agricultural demonstration team and one home economics demonstration team will compete in the state fair based on demonstrated farm practices and progressive home work. The four cooperatives cover expenses for team members and leaders.

High Teachers Institute Planned for November 7 8

Tri County high school teachers from Douglas Lane and Coos will meet in Eugene November 7 and 8 to form a joint institute. About 500 teachers are expected to attend with workshop sessions planned for elementary teachers focusing on measuring pupil achievement.

Fires Suppressions and Closures Amid Heat Wave Across Counties

Rising temperatures and low humidity halted logging operations for one or two days last week. Fire patrols across Cees, County, and Douglas County stayed alert as closures remained in effect. No fires were reported, but a warning urged utmost care and immediate reporting of suspicious conditions. A secondary fire near Bingham burned a few acres, likely set by children. All fires today were contained, with 1000 firefighters on standby statewide.

Cranberry Price Holds Steady in Coos County

Coos county cranberry prices are seen holding for the next decade. Marcus L. Urann and Carl B. Urann of Hanson Massachusetts, owners of Cape Blanco Cranberry company bogs near Langlois, toured the county. They note yields range from 140 to 408 barrels per acre in Coos, versus about 40 per acre for eastern growers.
