Free Red Cross swimming lessons offered in Coquille with registration at Maple school 7:45 a.m. Monday July 15. Charles Humble directs the program and supervises at the pool. Transportation costs 2.26 per swim. lessons free. Bus schedules align with each age group and start times.
John Gearhart retired after more than 51 years on the Port of Coquille River commission. A dessert supper at the Coquille Hotel honored him with a desk trophy presented by Port president Thomas Forrest. Attendees included Dora Gearhart and Dora Easton among others. Gearhart served as engineer manager and attorney and helped secure taxes for the port since 1927. He was among the first commissioners appointed in 1911 by Gov. Oswald West and held various roles, including county surveyor until 1957.
Clarence Relph kept June weather records for Myrtle Point showing a reading of 1.55 units. This keeps a local tally for the area and reflects a measured figure in the month.
Mrs Walter Laird of Coquille will describe her early pioneer life in Coos County at the Coos Curry Pioneer and Historical Assn meeting Saturday July 13 at Simpcon Park North Bend. A surprise announces that Mrs Al Volek 71 Langlois will be crowned Queen at the picnic Sunday July 28 in the Coos County Fair Grounds oak grove.

Temple Hauptfleisch of Bloemfontein South Africa arrives late July or early August to live with the Kenneth Galloway family in Broadbent while attending Myrtle Point Union High School. He is 18 on July 28, 5 ft 9 in, 163 lbs, plans to study photography drawing and reading, excels in English and sports including shot put javelin and pole vaulting. Local committee members include Mrs. Naslund and others. $700 funds were raised by the International Relations Club to support his visit.
The second of the summer evening services will be held Sunday night at 8 o clock at the Methodist Church. Rev John Wood will preach on A Christian Bio graphy Life of Charles Wesley. The Myrtle Point Ministerial Assn sponsors the event.

Officials warned of massive fuel piles from debris and urged full public cooperation and tighter area closures to recreationists.
Albertson of Myrtle Point was elected chairman of the Southwestern Oregon area Education district board for 1963 64. He succeeds A Jordan after serving as vice chairman with Byrer named to replace Jordan on the board. The meeting also named Orville Adams as vice chairman and Dick Hanen as secretary.
Bupt and Mrs Joe Stewart and family returned Sunday from a reunion over the Fourth at the Crooked River headwaters near Fossil. Guests of honor were Thomas Hall and wife and daughter Sarah Klein of Washington DC, visiting Oregon for two more weeks.
Little 18 month old Raymond Bargelt of Grants Pass was crushed under the wheels when his mother backed a car from a driveway near Mrs. Doris Clayton’s home. Neighbors helped lift the vehicle and he was rushed to Mast Hospital for treatment after a brief delay. He remained hospitalized overnight with a skull fracture.
