Cpl Albert Brown returns from Santa Barbara on furlough as Ray Brown serves in the South Pacific. Roy Byewates receives boxing medal from Preflight school. Robert Clarke graduates from officers training and gains Navy medical instruction in Washington. Delos Hoffman transfers to Pearl Harbor aboard a destroyer. Coosa County Trails in BD Bond Purchases as War Loan Drive Extends

Coosa County exceeds its War Loan Bonds goal for overall purchases with 2,029,060 toward 1,987,000 while individual BD bonds total 201,116 against a 720,000 target. County bond chairman Clarence H. Coe notes strong support from large buyers but urges more individual purchases. The sixth War Loan ends July 8 for all series except E bonds, extended to end of July, with plans to boost individual participation.

Local Flyers Win Honors In WWII Air Crew Promotions

Raymond Carver of Myrtle Point Oregon, promoted from staff sergeant to technical sergeant at an 8th Air Force station in England, serves as a Liberator crew chief in the oldest group. The unit earned a War Department citation for action in the August 1 1943 Plopsti battle and flies B 24s from Britain North Africa and the Middle East. Carver helped crew The Blessed Event with a long mission string. Harold T Hall another Myrtle Point youth also serves as crew chief aboard Zoot Snoot.

Army surplus trucks offered for farm use in Oregon

A limited number of surplus army trucks will be available for farms in Oregon with priority given through licensed motor vehicle dealers under price controls. Distribution will be orderly and fair, coordinated by county farm transportation committees and county war boards as trucks arrive.

Seldon Warners Have Five Grandsons in Navy

Mr and Mrs Mayse from Sitkum visited last Friday as five grandsons of the Seldon Warners are serving in the Navy. Richard Warner son of Roland Warner is at Cal Tech Pasadena in an officers training program on a 28 day furlough. His brother Robert Warner is a mechanic on a seaplane at Banana River Florida. Howard Hoffman is a rear officer at Sadamend Cooper in radar Wilmot Hoffman is a radio technician student.

Myrtlewood Drive Prospect Draws Strong Attendance

A Friday dinner meeting at the Coquille Valley Country Club drew a large crowd to discuss establishing a Myrtlewood drive or park along the highway between Myrtle Point and Coquille. Draper Brothers Face New Overseas Duty Together

M Sergeant Ben Draper and T Sergeant Tom Draper, famed as a duo from Chatham Field and veteran service partners, prepare to head overseas again. The brothers, raised in Myrtle Point Oregon, served side by side in Alaska California and Illinois, with Ben a former Navy electrician and Tom a bombardier in training. They, now at Chatham Field, look toward combat once more as a matched team in the next assignment.

Coquille Fourth of July Celebrations Draw Large Crowds

Large crowds attended Coquille events over the long Fourth of July weekend with six to seven thousand in town for the six day celebration. The Tuesday parade featured about 130 horses and riders and the Horse Show drew four thousand spectators at the park. Net proceeds funded a local fund with nearly five thousand dollars from the Queen contest won by Miss Gwen Elrod, Hotary club candidate.

Smallpox Case Reported By Health Officer

Health officer Dr. L Gould reports a smallpox case in Marshfield discovered yesterday. The patient was isolated at the Coos County Farm and vaccination is urged for all ages, especially infants, with annual updates to maintain immunity.

Waste Paper Collection Down Across the County

Mrs. Marcy Dies Wednesday at 77 in Marshfield

Mrs. Marcy, 77, formerly of Dora, died Wednesday July 5 at her daughter Mrs. Marjorie Miller’s home in Marshfield after a stroke. Survived by sons Dale of Marshfield and Lyle in the navy, daughter Mrs. Miller of Marshfield, brother Herbert Haynes of Millington, and sister Mrs. Minnie Noble of Portland. Roper Defeats Damages Suit Over Fatal Road Crash

A two case damage suit arising from the June 16 1942 Powers road crash that killed Clifford Morris and injured Maude Cosner was decided in favor of defendant P C Roper after a three day trial. The jury found both actions for $0 against Roper. Evidence showed Roper had just passed the oil truck before it went over the grade and no fault lay with him.
