District No 41 to offer six informal sessions led by district teachers starting January 25 at Myrtle Crest school. Parents will learn about new math approaches to better assist their children at home, with focus on understanding methods rather than turning parents into mathematicians.
West Coast Telephone plans a 16 million dollar three state construction budget for 1968 with 8 million for Oregon, the highest ever for the state. District manager J Bruce Eddy notes large projects along the Coos Bay area including Reedsport, North Bend, Empire and Myrtle Point, plus toll and extended area system expansions and new aerial and underground trunk cables to improve service. By year end 6,700 phones may be added in Oregon, with customer-satisfaction goals rising from 74.8 percent in 1968 toward 85.8 by 2008.
The Myrtle Point team traveled to Brookings and Gold Beach on January 16 securing a 35 30 victory over the Bruins and a 37 18 win against the Panthers. Dennis Evans Andy Lancaster Mary Amos and Al Bartlett posted key results as Myrtle Point built a late lead with strong pins and draws.
Six county high schools select senior girls for the Good Citizens award from the DAR. Laure Kirsch of Myrtle Point and Pat Anderson of Powers are chosen by student and faculty votes for dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism.
In the January session Chapman introduces an amendment and Ben Musa proposes Senate Bill 5 to strike a levy on county central committees. The 1964 election era sees committees collecting about one percent of candidate salaries. some pay, others refuse. A test suit is suggested to challenge the law. Senator Richard Chapman is noted in the discussion.
Obituary notices report the death of Jane Shull Dement in Eugene at Sacred Heart hospital after a three month illness. She was a lifelong Myrtle Point resident born February 9 1805 with several survivors and services held at Schweeder's chapel.
Martha Gurney died at 8 years after a Seattle area death listed as 16. Services were at St. James Lutheran church Myrtle Point with Rev Norman Steinke officiating. Burial Pacific Lutheran Cemetery Seattle graveside services followed. Surviving are sons Waldermar Hugo William and daughters Adeline Dorothy Eleanor and 14 grandchildren.
The Bloodmobile will operate at Myrtle Crest gym from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday February 1. The drive seeks 78 donors aged to donate blood free to hospitals. Curt Beckhem Myrtle Point Bloodmobile chairman urges participation as blood is always needed.
Jim King states state and local scholarships support seniors preparing to teach at elementary and secondary levels. Oregon Congress of Parents and Teachers offers renewable awards, with BWOC applications due in April. Myrtle Crest PTA and Bridge PTO provide $300 scholarships. the Schree der Scholarship rewards scholastic ability with athletic preference.
Myrtle Point improves to 6 6 on the season with wins over Pacific and Gold Beach to stay unbeaten in Sunset Conference action. Dennis Waterman leads with 15 points, Bill Neal adds 14, while Gurney scores 18 as Myrtle Point dominates early and holds off late Pirates surge to win 51 32.
