President's Birthday Ball planned in Myrtle Point for infantile paralysis fund

A Myrtle Point event marks the fourth year of national celebration for President's Birthday Ball activities. Committee members organize publicity, ticket sales, music and entertainment for a January 20-26 celebration. Seventy percent of net proceeds stay in the community to fund a trust for combating infantile paralysis.

County Court Lowers Warrants Interest to Five Percent

The county court ordered a five percent interest rate on warrants effective January 1, 1837 and instructed the treasurer to date 1936 warrants as of December 31, 1936. Salaries for most county employees rose to 10 monthly, with certain officers unchanged.

Truck Overturns On Bridge In Log Load Incident

A loaded logging truck owned by W K Nixon of Bridge and driven by his brother overturned on a bridge when a log struck the north end. The mishap occurred Monday near Mat Point, injuring no one and prompting local responders to scene from H Poarea.

Powers Heads Western Oregon Livestock Group

Albert H Powers of Powers was chosen to lead the Western Oregon Livestock association at a January 6 Roseburg meeting. Douglas county's Nichols is vice president and R M Knox of Curry county is secretary. The group aims to develop livestock and improve production and marketing, with county units holding one vote each and automatic membership for county association members.

Former Myrtle Point Postmaster Dies in Oregon

Henry B Steward, longtime Myrtle Point postmaster and former constable, died after news reached his brother-in-law Henry G Volkmar in Portland. Born January 21 1858 in Maine, Steward moved from California to Oregon in 1907 and served as postmaster for a decade and as constable earlier, with a career spanning mining, farming, contracting, and public service in Coos County.

County Livestock Meet Friday in Coos County

The Coos County Livestock Association will meet Friday at 1 30 PM in Woodman Hall Coquille. A new sole cementing press installed Tuesday at Ham Broa Hospital enables cementing soles to shoes in varied sizes without walls. Harley Miller of Harley's Shop Hospital stocked the press and improved his shop to better serve Myrtle Point and nearby areas.

Flue Fires Cause Slight Damage Here This Week

Fire broke out Tuesday morning in the Edwin Schroeder home on Fourth street when a stove heated the nearby wall too much. The blaze damaged wallpaper but was quickly put out by the fire department. Chief George Hughes injured his elbow during firefighting. A roof fire at the Jack residence Friday night caused by chimney sparks was extinguished with no damage.

Murl Laird of Sitkum fell Saturday with a teakettle of rolling water and scalded his arm from the elbow to the wrist. He was brought Monday to Myrtle Point to have the injured limb dressed.
