Bert Pearson became adjutant and quartermaster while E R Woods served as chaplain and John M Gilkinson as legislative officer. Trustees named were Gilkinson, N W Perkins, and LaFlamme. installing officer was Jack Kerman of District 9 Port Orford post. The post meets the first Thursday monthly.
The Cops Curry Teacher Federal Credit Union will hold its annual meeting Saturday Jan 13 at 700 p.m. in the banquet room of the Coquille Hotel in Coquille. Committee reports, election of officers to fill vacancies, and a dividend declaration are on the agenda. All Coos County members are urged to attend.
Coin collectors for the March of Dimes circulated around the city last week and began collecting local contributions to combat birth defects arthritis and polio The campaign director for Coos County is Joe Warr with the theme Your Dimes Will Do It Again.
Mary Gardner wife of Dr J H Gardner Myrtle Point spoke to Rotary on aging with 25 percent of the U S population over 65 by 1980 The talk covered aging effects on sight hearing coordination and memory and the financial and social issues of retirement She opposed retirement communities and urged making elderly people valuable contributors to society while noting retirement poses long term financial worries
Coquille outscored Myrtle Point 16-4 in the third quarter to take control and win 59-45 at home. Dick Down led Myrtle Point with 23 points, while Geoge Stonecypher netted 17 for Coquille. Down repeated as top scorer in the junior varsity and Terry Pullen led freshman scoring.
Myrtle Point plans a ten day Centennial celebration to mark the city's founding. The Junior Chamber of Commerce will plan and manage with Chamber support for financing. Highlights include a beard growing contest with 80 dollars in prizes, a parade with 75 dollars in prizes, a square dance on the street, fake store fronts, a train ride, guided tours, and a free history booklet for visitors. Beards begin in March with events slated for late May or early June, featuring a 100 year theme and special buttons for participants and non grow ers.
The board votes 3 to 1 to locate the new college at the Empire Lakes site, donating city property of 56 acres and purchasing adjoining private land for about $20 000. Henry F. Hansen opposes, calling for delay. others support the Empire location, though one member is absent.
The Myrtle Point Fire Department logged 25 calls in 1961 with estimated total losses of 12 710 dollars. Chief Mitch Myers noted declines from 30 calls in 1908 and a 1960 loss of 73 466 dollars. The 21 member force used respirators on three calls, including a surviving heart attack and a baby at Brudge.
Dr Van Lean of SWOC has been invited to speak at a joint PTA and PTA meeting at Myrtle Crest School on January 15 at 8:06. The talk covers the cost of higher education and national and state views. Refreshments will be served after the meeting, and parents from nearby communities are invited, with all sons interested in higher education encouraged to attend.
Rev Dorman Love, pastor of the Christian church, was elected Tuesday night to succeed Milton Schroeder as president of the Interchurch Fellowship. Bill Stevens became vice president with Lera Peterson as secretary treasurer. A feature program included slides and a lecture by Rev Hillis Slaymaker of Coquille Methodist Church on Alaska.
The Christian Church will present a mystery feature at Sunday School next Sunday at 9 45 am. The Children's department led by Mrs Ward Evans promises a surprising program with no advance details to be disclosed for children and adults attending the service.
Leep Brothers Logging Corporation has purchased and now operates the Hollywood Shake Company near their plant. Hollywood Shake, previously run by Don Knights and Merton Miller, will continue on the same load and be integrated with Leep operations.
The Stop and Shop jackpot reaches $600 at 2 p.m. Saturday as six names are called in participating stores. Each winner present in a member store will receive $100. Strong crowds are expected downtown for the special Stop and Shop prices offered by many shops.
The River Lew at Myrtle Point recorded only traces of rainfall during the elm weather. Officials noted dry conditions with minimal precipitation across the region.
