County plans battle to clear log jams for flood relief

County commissioners prepared to meet with Army Engineers at 2 p.m. in the courthouse to coordinate removal of log jams on the South Fork Coquille near Broadbent and the North Fork Gravelford area as heavy rain threatens renewed flooding. Officials cited 100 percent funding from the Army Corps and warned rapid runoff could trigger another flood with seven feet of snow on Elden Ridge and five feet during the Christmas flood. Forest and land management officials reported extensive blowdown and debris buildup, urging swift action to protect bridges and communities.

Security Bank of Myrtle Point posted year end records with total deposits of 8 303 723 79 including 3 400 818 91 in demand and 4 702 004 88 in time deposits. Manager Charles Pochlitz announced a rate hike from 3 4 percent to 4 percent per annum payable quarterly on savings deposits effective January 1.

Police Chief Lewis Floyd released the city police department year end report noting increases from 1963. The department logged 2 538 calls 612 more than 1963 with 1 306 247 more investigations 1 306 3257 jailed 120 more juvenile cases 94 47 more traffic citations 96 eight more traffic warnings 92 four more curfew warnings 141 48 more. Patrol miles reached 34 906 329 miles more than 1968.
