Mrs. Guy Graham of Myrtle Point died at Coquille Valley Hospital on Tuesday February 17 after a two vehicle collision at 1 25 PM in Norway Oregon. The Grahams slowed to turn into a driveway and were struck in the rear by a C M milk truck driven by Robert Lee Phillips of Myrtle Point.
The list shows MPHS seniors Kathy Kendall JoAnn Maat Delores Northup Sheila Pittulo Marte Stone and Laurie Tucker with 4.0 GPA for the second nine weeks. Additional honor roll entries include Sheila Sullivan Flora Crook Susan Graham Ann Murray and many others across grades with 3.5 to 4.0 GPAs.
The University of Oregon brass section performs a free concert Sunday February 22 at 3 p.m. in Myrtle Crest gym. Directed by John Kendall and Les Simons, the program includes marches from the 16th century to modern works with the University Band joining on Estampie by Vaclav Nebytel. A post concert pot luck and transportation funding from a high school coke machine are noted.
The Myrtle Point School District 41 outlines the 1970 71 budget based on 1475 students and 36 000 bonded debt. A series of board meetings through February set salary, leave, hospital, and bus adjustments with a March 13 budget hearing.
Myrtle council heard a planning commission report on the Kamion Thrift corner lot offered at 9900 for three parcels for an off street parking site near the new fire station. Officials discussed an alternative bank lease of corner Sth and Ash buildings to city, plus cost estimates for a sewer project serving 11 homes with per‑connection charges.
Steven Patzer won first place as a winger with 1 021 000 points earning the top prize and a second extra prize. Peggy Lille took 661 000 points for second high prize and first extra prize. Marcus Brown and Timmy Hoffman earned third and fourth with 646 000 and 683 500 points, winning bikes from Western Auto.
Junior high basketball sharpshooters across the area competed in the annual Elks free throw contest held last month. Coquille Valley Elks champion was Jerry Gardner of Myrtle Point, who scored 35 of 60 and was escorted to the ceremony.
The Myrtle Point Development Company is formed by the chamber of commerce and ready to adopt by-laws and register stock. Ten thousand dollars in stock will be offered at one hundred dollars a share in March. Officials Duane Netland Bob Hogan and Chet Weed were appointed to study Ham Thrift property for off street parking and to meet with Security Bank on using Ash and Sun Street property for parking. A Coast Highway Association meeting is set for March 13 in Coos Bay to discuss highway improvements.
A county council on alcoholism forms a voluntary citizens group addressing alcoholism as a public health issue. The body includes representatives from business, industry, ministry, education, judiciary, public health, Alcoholics Anonymous, and other areas. Security Bank of Myrtle Palm announced plans to open a Coquille branch at a yet to be chosen site. Officials stated the exact location and opening date would be released once plans are finalized.
