Youth Drowns After Log Jam Incident in East Fork

Calvin Ellsworth Bigelow 72, a Myrtle Point native born February 22 1914, drowned Sunday noon while logs were being moved on the East Fork of the Coquille River near Gravelford Coos County. Witnesses including Floyd Parrish and George Singel reported the accident occurred at 12 30 pm and body was recovered about five oclock downstream from the last sighting. Bigelow worked at Coos Bay Lumber and earlier on the Bald Hill ranch. Funeral services were held at Schroeder Funeral Home with interment in Myrtle Point cemetery. He is survived by two sisters Velma Hedford and Wilma. a brother Harold and his parents.

Merchants Defeat Transpacifics in Myrtle Point Bid

The Myrtle Point Merchants defeated Port Orford 25 to 23 at the high school auditorium. Fred Barklow broke the deadlock with a late foul shot about 25 seconds before the end. Starting lineup included Bob Pewrice, Lyle Carver, George Linn, Raymond Carver, Dale Drusliner, K. O. Hall, and Fred Barklow with periodic substitutions.

Myrtle Grange Meets in Lundy Hall

Myrtle Grange held a Tuesday meeting in Lundy hall with Master John Carl presiding. A strong attendance despite illness followed by games led by lecturer Mrs. Roy Robison and refreshments of chocolate and cookies. An all day session and potluck dinner are planned for March 2 with baskets requested.

Prominent Matron Nellie Barton Davis Dies in Roseburg

Nellie Barton Davis of Roseburg died Saturday from pneumonia after a brief illness. funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Schroeder Funeral Home in Myrtle Point, with interment in Norway Cemetery. She was born March 1 1904 in Osage Iowa and lived in Coos County before moving to Roseburg in 1933. She leaves husband Clarence R Davis a son Elvin Oestreich a daughter Marilyn Mae Davis a step-daughter Hazel Davis McEwan a brother R L Barton and four sisters.

Aged Prospector Dies After Pneumonia Illness

Edward Bryant, a late seventies prospector who sold a mining claim near Powers for about a thousand dollars, died February 16 1937 from double pneumonia following flu. He went to Mast Tuesday in critical condition and funeral arrangements were pending word from his brother nh E Bryant of Spokane Washington.

The Myrtle Point Woman's club meets next Monday at 2 30 p m at city hall. Mrs Verne Lundy heads the Retna Homes program and the roll call will be a household hint.
