A duck hunting trip near the California Oregon border recounts a cautionary tale about a self important hunter who concealed minds from the firing line. The writer contrasts courteous old sportsmen with a rash disruptive individual who drove a bright pickup and claimed space behind the line.
The old cypress at 6th and Maple in Myrtle Point was felled by George and Ralph Humbert. The tree measured 6 feet 9 inches in diameter and was planted in 1887 by L. A. Roberts. Helene Hughes, current property owner, and her brother Geo Hughes stand beside the fallen trunk.
The Myrtle Point Bobcats meet the Bandon Tigers Friday at 8 pm in the Junior High School gym in a must win game to reach sub district playoffs. Cosgrove and Martinka lead scoring for Myrtle Point as coach Kaytor hopes for strong fan turnout to boost the team. The Bobcats travel to Bandon Saturday night.

Sunday service saw the dedication of chimes and recordabells at First Methodist Church in memory of Jennie M. Clarke by Dr. O. H. Clarke and church friends. The Carillonic bell reproduces a six ton resonance at tiny weight, amplified up to one million times, with tolling and swinging options. Twenty five chimes cover two octaves, tuned to 1/10,000 by stroboscope, and playable from organ keyboard or tower controls. An electric clock allows automatic music programming. Reverend Meredith Graves attended the ceremony. An Angelus Hour concert will follow at 6 pm. Afternoon Youth Fellowship meeting drew over 50 members led by Bruce Whitaker.
Mrs J H Olinger Sr was selected to chair the 1955 Heart Fund campaign to run through February in Myrtle Point. The drive supports local heart disease programs and nationwide American Heart Association efforts.
Silas Ellis, secretary of the Myrtle Point Saddle Club, announces the annual banquet on February 4 at Valley Golf and Country Club. All members are invited to attend that evening at seven o'clock.
Coquille on February 1 Glenn Moore was sentenced to six months for selling liquor to a death car driver involved in an accident Sunday near Bandon that killed James Bradford 17 and Clinton Martindale 18 both of Coquille.
Bill Bowerman assistant athletic director at the University of Oregon will address an Oregon Booster meeting at the Coquille hotel next Tuesday February 8. He will discuss Highlights of the 1954 Coast Conference Football Season. Luncheon at noon. those interested should contact George Linn for reservations. A large Myrtle Point group is hoped for.
A father and son competition developed at the John Cawrse Trophy shoot held by the Myrtle Point Spottemen's club on Sunday afternoon. Scores and specific placements are unclear due to damaged text, but V.V. Hagedorn and Henry Burrescha were among those mentioned.

Ed Capps Jr was elected president for the year with H R Dayton as vice president and Mabel Daley secretary treasurer. Lincoln Day banquet planned for Feb. 12 at Tiege hotel with speaker Todd Tibbetts and local officials in attendance.
Oregon residents spent 6,016,358 dollars for 117,135 cases of whiskey and spirits in December, the highest monthly dollar total for the state liquor control commission. Despite the surge, six months of the current fiscal year show sales 1.9 percent below last year’s pace with 131,802 cases sold.
