Youth Seek Recreation Center in Myrtle Point

A Myrtle Point youth group led by Mrs R A Epperson won city council approval to pursue a downtown recreation center for local youth. Backers include the Chamber of Commerce Lions and Rotary clubs, with a priority on securing a suitable building for social and recreational activities.

AC Smith of Coquille, superintendent for Coos Y Lumber, was elected president of the Willamette Valley Loggers Conference at Eugene last week. The conference urged support of the Oregon forest conservation law to conserve timber resources.

Return of Sgt. Warner from Tokyo to Seattle Discharge Expected

Sgt. Douglas Warner reached San Francisco after arrival from Tokyo and Pacific posts. He will proceed to Seattle where he expects a discharge in the near future. He called his mother Mrs Lena Warner to share the news.

Christmas Pageant Held in High School Auditorium

Community Christmas program presented at the high school auditorium Wednesday evening. The Chor al club performed a pageant after weeks of practice with junior high orchestra under J. Hy. McNab and several junior performers. The Nativity scene featured angels Wise Men and pantomime storytelling with choirs and carol medleys.

Wild Life Heads Visit in Oregon by Agents

G H Hansen new district agent for the Fish and Wildlife Service in Oregon and E G Albert assistant agent from Medford visited Myrtle Point today. They confer with officials and contact local government trappers as Hansen succeeds Roy P Gate who had led Oregon Wildlife for years.

Takes Derby Prize With 16-lb Steelhead

Interest grows in the Lions club fish derby. Last week’s winner was J. P. Evernden with a 16 pound 4 ounce steelhead weighed at the C and Murphy store in Bridge. Clarence Strong placed second at Haga’s Locker with a 16 pound 12 ounce fish. Austin Dodge finished close behind with a fish just under Strong’s weight.

City Council Advances Youth Center Plans and Local Projects

The City Council in regular session approved pursuing a downtown youth recreational and social center pending building and financing. They authorized a crushed rock stockpile at the city warehouse, planned rock purchases for street repairs, and discussed water system improvements. A class C beer license for the Bafeway store and a class B license for the Semning Post hall were approved, with the latter license active on Dec 4 and a new 1946 application filed. Santa Claus will be at the Hit and Theatre at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon December 2.

High School Grapples With Flu Epidemic Absences

Myrtle Point High School reports about 90 absences due to flu with seventy absentees on Monday. Several teachers including Mr Dunning Mr Moller and Mr Neugart were also out mid week. A new senior Glenn Jenkins enrolled from Reedsport High School.

Santa Claus to Visit Myrtle Point for Meet and Greet

Local Lions invite children to meet St Nick Saturday from 2 to 4 p m in front of the Hilaid Theatre. A throne will be set in the outdoor foyer of the Shean where Santa will distribute gifts from a bag to youngsters from Myrtle Point and surrounding areas.

Callie Smith plans a Christmas vacation trip to San Francisco while Wanda Hoffman and Billie Osborne discuss a Portland visit. A senior Christmas assembly is set for Friday during activity period with a program featuring master of ceremonies Wilsabeth Pearson, readings by Ella Jearr Harris and Betty Sumerlin, songs led by C P McNai and Ralph Weekly, and acts including Carol Huntley and Charles Wooldridge with saxophone by Mrs Moller.
