4 H club members prepared exhibits for the 1847 Cups County Fair to be held November 11 12 and 13 at Union High School with displays housed in local facilities.
Fragmentary figures show county and city tax rates and levies for North Bend and neighboring towns. The garbled text lists various sums and mill rates across Coos Bay area communities, including North Bend and Myrtle Point, with multiple combined totals.
Major Marion Carl, 31, a Marine pilot and Oregon State College graduate, set a 680 mph world speed record in a Navy jet, surpassing 640 mph by Turner Caldwell Jr. Carl is nephew of John Carl of Arago district. He downed 18 Japanese aircraft in the Pacific and holds two Navy Crosses. He was the first to land a P 80 jet on an aircraft carrier.
Reserved seating for the Pacific International livestock exposition horse show and rodeo, scheduled October 3 11, became available this week via mail order from 801 Wilcox Building Portland. Theodore B Wilcox, president, said sales start a month earlier than last year to avoid last minute seat shortages. Box seats 360 inerved seats 300 and 240.
Mr and Mrs Earl Roger from Broadbent report a visit with relatives from outside the state. Mrs Rory Merritt and two daughters from Omaha Nebraska returned home Saturday after the visit.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Van Doren and daughter Winnifred depart Myrtle Point for their new Ashland Oregon home Monday morning. The family came from Cheyenne Wy three years ago in November and have been active in church and civic affairs. They will be missed by a circle of friends. Mr and Mrs Denver Greer will move into their residence and Greer will supervise morgue work under Mr Schroeder.
Poles and equipment for eight forty foot floodlights have arrived and Mountain States Power Co will install wires and poles this week at the Coos County Fairgrounds. Eight poles with twenty four 1500 watt bulbs will light the arena in front of the grandstand for a fall night horse show with future potential for night rodeos. R. E. A. sets the poles and Mountain States handles the rest at no cost beyond poles and lighting gear.
Union high school Repcats announce a schedule with five home games five night games and one daytime contest against Coquille on November 15 at 2 pm. Road games include Albany Reedsport North Bend and Coquille Myrtle Point Armistice Day game at Coquille. Coach Curtis Beckham notes eight lettermen returning with steady district opposition from Roseburg and Grants Pass.
Grants Pass forest supervisor H C Obye announces two Coquille river road segments and the south fork Coquille road will be closed to logging trucks on Sundays and holidays or after noon on Saturdays. The action aims to protect travelers and workers as unsafe hauling practices rise and Coos county supports similar enforcement on a county road between Powers and the Siskiyou boundary.
Leslie R. King youngest son of Mr and Mrs Dude King of Powers suffered a fractured hip Monday afternoon when a logging arch backed over him at the Coos Bay Lumber Company camp near Powers. He was first carried to Powers by a speeder on the Southern Pacific then moved to Mast Hospital by Dr Brown and Jack Flater in a Flater ambulance.
Mretic chapter O E S hosts the 46th annual Natal Day observance in Coos County to honor Robert Morris founder of the Order. Registration starts at 10 am in the old gym with a dinner at Fellowship hall and an afternoon session at 2 pm. Evening session at 8 pm features light refreshments. Officers Mrs George Barton president George Barton vice president and Mrs James Gamwell secretary treasurer lead the hosts with Grand officers and guests from western Oregon expected.
Mr and Mrs Dallas Norton and family moved to Corvallis where they will reside while Norton assumes duties as assistant registrar and coordinator of personnel at Oregon State College starting September 1.
A long range program to cut log truck crashes in Oregon will be launched by the Accident Prevention Division at a state safety conference in Salem September 11 to 13. Delegates will include log operators drivers manufacturers dealers trade reps labor and state agencies. Sessions cover loading and unloading safety transport maintenance and use of check charts and new safety rule books.
Coy Detozier reported planting 18 000 fingerlings in the Middle Fork of the Coquille river near Remote and Rock Creek. This week 25 000 more fingerlings were to be released in the South Fork with additional plantings planned in the East and North Fork. All fish came from the Bandon hatchery and measure two to four inches.
Mr and Mrs Flentge Perkins returned last Saturday from a vacation covering over 3008 miles across four states Oxegen Washington Idaho and Montana and two Canadian provinces British Columbia and Alberta. They reported a wonderful trip with only minor trouble and one fat tree was their only issue.
Powers schools begin early September with classes set for September 8. Nicklaus finished summer school in Eugene and is due home this week. The grade school will add new teachers due to three registrations, and commercial teacher Mrs Nan C Mobderley has resigned.
Marshfield district officials report long distance calls rising sharply as circuits remain strained. Most calls outside the state still route through Portland with lines allocated but no set delivery date. Officials foresee improved equipment and timelier service once available.
Union services of Brethren Methodist Christian and Presbyterian churches will be held Sunday evening at 8:00 in the Atf Presbyterian Church. Rev W A Briggs of the Methodist church will lead the evening song service and Rev Richard Cochran of the Presbyterian church will deliver the sermon.
The Coos County Royal Neighbors held their twenty seventh annual convention at the Junior High School with well over 100 in attendance. Officers for 1948 were elected and inducted as sessions included a flag presentation, banquet by the Myrtle Grange, and a candlelight memorial.
Workers at a cannery in St. Coquille yesterday canned 25 elk meat cans for the Timmons home for convalescent elderly. Mrs. W L Bell, director, said the plant is running at full capacity and expected a heavy run.
