Union High School announces a Sept. 8 opening under principal Leland P. Linn. Students register Sept. 2 to 7 by class day to reduce congestion, with a $2 per semester student fee covering dues, jewel fees, and game admissions. Faculty list and opening plan outlined for the new year.
Hiram Hatcher, 84, who spent 14 months confined indoors after a broken hip, was downtown yesterday and walked with a cane. Once a Civil War veteran and Texas Ranger, he credits his caregiver wife, a daughter, and neighbors for his recovery and happiness.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Norris left Tuesday for Withrow Washington for a surprise family visit. A Norris sister and her daughter arrived in Myrtle Point the same day to visit the Norris home. Edith Hawes and Iris Rogers are the visitors. Plans are set for a reunion in Portland upon their return.
The O E 8 of Myrtle Point hosted state officers and members yesterday. Miss Minnie White, grand matron, led a school of instruction in the afternoon. The Presbyterian church ladies served a dinner at the church parlors later.
The Herald seeks four copies of the August 16 newspaper. It will pay 25 cents per copy for up to four copies. The money is for a small pin money fund for a student. Bring in any single copy you have.
The Herald printer has brought a copy of the National Tribune to the office and confirms the paper is still published. It now serves veterans including GAR members and Spanish American War and World War veterans.
Max Dement and daughter Lila with Miss Madge Hawiey were riding home from Portland when another car struck their carrier near Oakland. The Dement car was dragged then crashed into a ditch and rolled over. All four suffered injuries including a badly wrenched back for Mrs Dement. the other driver fled and left no license plate number.
An electric power interruption occurred Monday at noon when a farmer named Delmar felled a tree across a power line. The outage affected nearby customers and prompted response from the power company to restore service.
Mrs. Clarence Schroeder entertained many neighbors at the Schroeder place with a pot luck supper. A large crowd enjoyed reminiscing as families and friends from Arago and nearby communities attended the event.
Wm. J. McLean, a war veteran and East Fork homesteader, died when his model T Ford left the grade near Jora school. Investigators cite loose gravel as the likely cause and the wreck was found by two boys. Several locals attended the burial at Norway Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The report lists veterans and local mourners connected to the service.
The Sunday school hosted a well attended silver tea in Nixon's hall. Performances included piano selections by Myrtle Beckett and Claudia Parker, a talk by Helen Whitaker, and a vocal solo. Attendees from Myrtle Point joined the event and refreshments were provided by Mrs. James Morrison and Miss Maude Hooton.
Aug 26 Mrs Adolph Hayes underwent an operation for an abscess on the breast at North Bend hospital. Her condition remains serious. Miss Genevieve Carman visits her cast at Bawden. Several local residents noted weekend travel and family activity including weddings and camping trips.
Dr H A Reynolds chiropractor and physio therapist now based in another location has rented the Henry Rodder residence on Maple Street one block south of the Southwestern Motors shop and will move his family here soon. He is Mrs Ellis Gant's father and visited to decide on locating here.
Myrtle Point Garden club met Tuesday evening in the city hall with an unusual merit awarded. Mrs Moller sang two solos accompanied by Mrs Nuideigh. Miss Helen Whitaker spoke on plant life in central China describing Chinese beauty and flood-devastated homes.
The county court approves a road amendment adding the North Fork East Fork route via Cooper Bridge and raises funds for multiple projects. Chamber roads committee chair Jesse D. Clinton says the road serves Myrtle Point more than others, as community leaders urge timely donations to the Chest.
