The public education on forest fire prevention shows progress as smoke has been unusually light this season. Coastal sportsmen urge Oregon Game Commission to open deer elk and trout seasons earlier and extend the trout season to November 1, criticising commissioners for passing decisions to field men. The Myrtle Point High School Bobcats face a rebuilding season under Coaches Beckham Bunnell and Neugart as rookies step up to replace graduated stars. The schedule announced includes McMinnville Eugene Coos Bay Roseburg Lebanon Reedsport North Bend Coquille with open dates and junior varsity games.
Elementary and junior high schools will begin on Tuesday September six with minor staff changes. Three new teachers join the faculty including Harriet Ellen Kohn assigned as librarian at the High School. Brandon remains at Norway for first grade while Miss Rather Woltz brings a U S Air Corps veteran background.
Mrs. Robert Benes of North Bend is named attendance supervisor for 1948 50 by Martha Purdy the county superintendent. The move allows James Leonard to focus on juvenile officer duties while the county court approves the appointment. Mrs Purdy notes Leonard has been faithful and capable and will continue liaison with the county office.
The Brodie Shingle Co begins a 60 by 72 foot concrete fireproof building at Third and Spruce in Myrtle Point. It will have a basement and two floors with general business on the street level and a mezzanine display area above. Occupancy is targeted for early next spring.
Daley judging team Duane Mayes Bill Reed and Eugene Winningham represented Myrtle Point at the Tillamook county YPA Judging Contest August 34 with sixty boys on twenty teams from Oregon. Holsteins Guernseys Jerseys were judged. Hayes scored 501.2 of 600 placing sixth. Team total 1378.2 of 1800. Instructor A E Hildebrandt led the group visiting dairy farms en route.
Union High school teachers will participate in a two day in service training on September 1 and 2 during regular school hours. Cliff Robinson, director of secondary education from the state department of education, will assist with the program.
The Natal Day association, a 48 year old Coos county Eastern Star group, marks its anniversary with an upcoming meeting on Wednesday August 31. The event honors Robert Morris founder of the Eastern Star born August 31 1818, tracing back to early 1900s celebrations and the association’s founding in Coos county.
Mr and Mrs F L Moon of Myrtle Point celebrated the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr Moon and his oat and uncle Mr and Mrs J R Cousens of Port Teresa Wash last Sunday with a party.

Modernization affects 66 Oregon Washington and California exchanges, delaying until the next directory. example: 531 becomes 831 in September.
About 110 men from Coos Bay Lumber Co and Coos County Fire Patrol fought four fires near Remote over the weekend. The blazes covered over 400 acres of logged-off land, destroyed 4,000,000 feet of logs and a donkey engine plus logging gear. Fires were at Remote Tanner Creek French Creek and Bilyeu Creek. most men left the scene as fires came under control. Cause of the fires not learned but suspected from careless cigarette smoking or open car exhausts.
Myrtle Point Union High agriculture students in the FFA branch are preparing appropriate exhibits for the upcoming fair. The program emphasises practical learning and aims to help students earn spending money through marketable projects.
Coos Bay agents elected new officers to guide the association. George Oerding of Coquille named President, W B Billingsley of Myrtle Point Vice President, William L Huggins of Coos Bay Secretary. New directors include Irwin D Shriver North Bend and Clyde Deal Empire. Retiring President Ed White highlighted a ten week study course and improved relations among agents across western Douglas, Coos and Curry counties.
Noble Chewning and Jack McLarrin sparked a thrilling finish as they split the final round at Coquille Country Club. McLarrin edged Noble Chowning 1 up after two 36s by McLarrin and a 38 by Noble, with Dettman Holiman and other results in the championship flight.
Funeral services for Albert N. Ames, 68, who died at his Bridge home August 20, were held Tuesday at 2 p m at Schroeder Funeral Home with Rev. Marion Stern of the Church of the Brethren officiating. An agricultural fair lists cash prizes for livestock categories including cows calves and other farm animals. The notice emphasizes the truck division and live stock events with prize details and entry guidance.
In 1949 an extended requirement assigns Coos County men to inspect brands at slaughter plants and new sales yards in Myrtle Point. Cattle, horses and other livestock must bear brand or transportation certificates costing 25 cents per head or per book of 50. School officials announce pupil registration ahead of the new term. Teachers will be available at the school on specified dates to assist with enrollment and records.

Airman apprentice John W. Piott, son of Mr and Mrs G H Piott of Stikum Route Myrtle Point Oregon, is attached to the escort aircraft carrier USS Rendova which has just received the Battle Efficiency Pennant and is operating out of San Diego California.
