Myrtle Point Union High School and all grades prepare for opening Tuesday morning with 9am registration after a general assembly. New courses include commercial law taught by Edgar Rickard and a normal mathematics course for freshmen.
The City Meat market has a refreshed look after improvements in the past week. Eight feet more of refrigeration allows better display of meats, shelving reconfiguration adds space, walls are repainted, new linoleum covers the floor, and windows receive matching coverings. Overall the shop appears neater and more attractive.
Misa Katie Guerin arrived yesterday for a two week visit at the Sol home of her parents Mr and Mrs Jira Guerin. She had been in the sanitarium at Salem for months and friends expect her to continue improving at home. Her sister Crystal from Ceae is mentioned with Mrs Merle.
George Clinton of Lee county was severely injured in a fall from a hay loft at his home last Saturday. He grabbed the hay chute to prevent a fall, was taken to Mast hospital, and remains there with possible chest injuries. He is 71 and his wife, children, and relatives joined at the hospital.
Dr Walter Torbet of San Francisco and Rev M A Marcy of Salem will attend to lead morning and evening services at the Methodist church in Myrtle Point. Rev H Willard and Rev E G Ranton provide music. A banquet is set for Monday the 18th to discuss church debt and future plans with invited friends.
Oregon school superintendents meeting in Salem call for free textbooks for all students and broader administration units, expanded physical education, and a state fund to equalize opportunities in poorer districts. Roy Cannon is elected president with Martha Mulkey and Maybelle Romig as officers. Limiting salmon fishing, the 1929 act, applies to the Umpqua River. attorney general clarifies status amid special regulations.
Eddie Brain hosts a boxing card at the American Legion pavilion on Maple Street. The usual fighters enter multiple bouts refereed by Roy Cedarstrom of Marshfield.
Ernest Norris opens in the former Lund's Toggery building on Spruce Street, preserving previous policies while offering a larger stock. Lund's sale continues through the stock clearout, drawing strong opening day crowds and bargain seekers.
The Standard Oi Announcer Car will tour the two counties promoting the fair from September 17 to 20. It features a modern portable public addressing system used in parades and crowds and has drawn crowds in the Pacific west with voices of Governor Young, Governor Hartley, and Mayor Rolph among others.
Clyde E Niles, owner in Niles-Wilson Motor Co formerly Baynes Garage, visited Myrtle Point on Saturday. He previously lived in Sheridan, Oregon and was impressed with Coos County, believing a bright future for the region. The firm operates garages in Myrtle Point and Coquille selling Ford products.
Ed Forrest and Lloyd Lackey, contracted to supply the Eugene Fruit Growers Association, have bought two Ford trucks. They will transport evergreen berries from Coos county to the Eugene canning plant using specially constructed bodies for unloading. Each trip aims to carry at least four tons per car.
Ranchers arrived in Myrtle Point with evergreen berries for Forrest and Lackey who planned to ship to a cannery soon. Buyers were not purchasing the berries, so the ranchers returned home. Those selling berries should call buyers before delivering to ensure market presence next week.
Two district deputies, Mr James of Portland and Mr Whitney of Galem, surprised the Modern Woodmen during their regular Monday evening meeting.
Allen Hartley, age unknown, died after a gun was discharged at the Ernest Norris home. He had been visiting with cousin Neil Hartley and Miss Genevieve Norma. The shot struck him in the head, and he died at a local hospital. He had recently recovered from injuries in a truck accident and was living with Jack Hartley at Broadbent. Funeral services were held at Schroeder chapel with Elder Thomas Backlow officiating.
E N Breesman of the Oregon State College Farm Crops Department arrived in Marshfield to inspect bent grass seed growers. County agents coordinate the program and county agent George H Jenkins says this year’s seed acreage is similar to last year with some new plantings. Most seed is contracted already and cutting and threshing will begin after inspections.
Mrs Faury Davis Mrs Karl Kil ran of Los Angeles Mrs Harry Gamble of Marysville California Margaret Chase and Ray Guerin returned Saturday from a trip to the George Guerin ranch at Eckley They also visited Salmon mountain Niles Best displayed a gold nugget over 200 grains valued at about eleven dollars found on the Walter Endicott claim Bears left tracks during the first night in camp and they saw several deer along the way
The Highland theatre drew crowds late in the week to hear new RCA pictures. The tones are as soft as quality radio and the upgraded equipment delivers more music than before. Management is pleased and many patrons extended congratulations.
A thunder storm swept over Douglas county and part of Cona Monday alarming fire patrols in both counties. No fires were reported in the woods though lightning accompanied the storm and it was visible from Myrtle Point.
