The 1978 Coos County Fair lists dates from August 16 to 30 with Senior Citizens Day August 18 and Family Day August 30. Grandstand events include Logger Shedee championships and 4H FFA judging, with free entry for seniors and discounted family admissions.
Myrtle Point School District 41 sets Aug 14 start for high school and all schools register 9 to 4 with early registration urged. Counselor back Aug 31 for special assistance. District assigns Broadbent and town schools to Broadbent students to streamline bus routes and add roughly 35 minutes daily teaching time at Bridge.
A meeting is planned for 7 30 p m Tuesday Aug 15 at the Community Multi Service Center 630 Spruce to discuss needs and possibilities for day care for pre schoolers and older children from low income families. Transportation help or information may be obtained by calling 5782373. The Myrtle Point Kindergarten at 506 1 8 Railroad Ave will begin its 1978 73 year on Wednesday Aug 20 with classes at 9 00 a m and 12 30 p m.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce met at Loy's Restaurant and learned that a 9600 pledge for a lake and recreation area study south of Myrtle Point is the only pledge received so far. Dr Jom Restock said the commission has presented the proposal to various groups but no other organizations pledged funds. The chamber voted to buy a life time Pioneer House Association membership for 960, to aid restoring the Wagner home in Powers, and heard Gold Coast Publications plan to sell Myrtle Point area advertising for a local map booklet and asked for a price on a local telephone directory publication.
All new full time students and some part time students enrolling in certificate programs at Southwestern Oregon Community College will be required to take English and mathematics placement tests prior to registration. The tests are scheduled for Tuesday September 14 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday September 14 at 7 p.m. and Saturday September 16 at 5 p.m. in Center 3 on the SWOCC campus.
Finalists for Shodeo competitions in power saw bucking and related events were set after eliminations at the Coos County Fairgrounds last Saturday. Qualifiers include Arlise Busby of Weyerhaeuser Co with 46.5 seconds, Mike Cole of Weyerhaeuser Co 47.6, Ray Antin of Griffey Logging Co 4.1, Glen Perry of Georgia 50.6, Don Gibbs of Lloyd Anderson Logging Co 84.65, and State Highway Administrator George Baldwin. Exams for Myrtle Point High School football players are scheduled for August 17 and 18 at 4 pm. Juniors and seniors report on August 17, freshmen and sophomores on August 18, at Myrtle Point Medical Center with no plans yet announced for the season.
