Premier Molotov announced Russia's declaration of war on Japan with action already starting on the Eastern front. President Truman confirmed the move in Washington and tensions rise as analysts foresee a quicker end with Soviet involvement.
Episcopal and Lutheran groups will share a chapel in the post office building on Spruce Street. The Episcopal group will meet on the third Sunday in September and a parish meeting will be held before winter. The Lutherans will use the room on the first and third Sundays, sharing furnishings with the Episcopalians to mutual benefit.
Local high school boys including Harrison Floyd Harold Ray Jack LaFlamme Everett Culver Roy Anderson Glen Daniels Bill Farmer Clifford Brownson Norman Jarvis and Gordon Schnurr help at a permanent fire patrol camp in Bridge supervised by an Army sergeant with Dwight Culver assisting. A well with electric pump is nearly ready and showers will be installed. they are well paid and live out of doors for 84 hours. A Kanaan Picnic is planned for Sunday August 12 in Deer Creek park Roseburg with Kansans invited and a pot luck lunch at noon.
The Interchurch Fellowship meeting featured singers from local churches with Mrs M J Blinckenetoff named director. A petlock supper was served and a September meeting date to be announced. Ralph Kring showed pictures of Death Valley while Joan and Esther Schroeder performed songs.
A weekly market outlook reports that civilian meat supplies may rise as the fall grass cattle move to market and slaughter volumes rebound. Through 1945 total meat production remains about 12 percent below 1944, with farm meat prices up around seven percent and the meat animal index at 172 percent of 1936–40.
The 4 H summer camp at McKinley Ground wrapped up Sunday after a four day session. About 30 staff and instructors from Oregon State College led classes in mining, forestry, farming, entomology and crafts for local youths amid field trips, sports and a boat donated by Lindy Ako.
Myrtle Grange plans the annual picnic at Norway Grove with a Saturday ritual and pot luck dinner. Rudy Recheck will preside as master of ceremonies while visitors from McKinley and other granges attend the event after the usual business session. Rev. C E Brittain spent the week in Portland on church business and returned home later.
Girls and boys take turns leading camp fire programs at Cam Lawhorn with education film showings on tuberculosis wildlife and forest protection. Mrs Geiss leads a vesper service as 4 H camp returns for a second year at the new site in Coos County.

The United States Army notes a plentiful future use, while cautioning wartime decisions depend on progress and the conflict's duration.
