Sunday visits note social calls and travels across local residents. Entries include Mr and Mrs E C Barker in Bandon, Lunekees Geest at a Tuesday luncheon in Bandon, and other neighborly visits. Various trips and greetings among families in Oregon locales.
A defective rail caused the derailment of a Louis era Pacific logging train a mile above Broadbent around noon Friday. Three cars left the track after another car passed, sending 11 cars with nearly 100000 feet of cedar bound for Coos Bay off the rails. The wreck halted Friday traffic until noon Saturday, injuring Dickford Hartlett who was knocked from a bridge but survived.
Robert Johnson sold the Myrtle Point Barber shop on Fourth Street between Apruce and Maple two in a recent deal. Mahaffey couple from El Centre Call reside now at Louie Park. Johnson and family left for Bend last week where he reportedly bought a business.
Myrtle Point firemen mapped the city assigning street numbers to houses. Fore Chief Gen Hughes can provide numbers and purchasing options. Some roads near Maple Street and Spruce Street remain unplotted as the survey proceeds.
Four H club members in Coos County prepare special projects and enter county and 4 H competition with a boy and girl chosen from each county based on leadership and achievement. The 1936 contest, organized by The First National Bank through Portland branch units, expands statewide with judges including county agents and school superintendents. A three day trip to Portland for the West Coast Exposition in October will feature show grounds visits and host bank entertainment with transportation and all expenses covered.
An oil company hosted a Sunday August 1 picnic at Wagner Grove in Broadbent. About 60 people from Marshfield Bandon Coquille Roseburg and Myrtle Point attended. A noon picnic dinner followed by games races and swimming.
A regular WC T U gathering is scheduled for Friday August 13 at 2 PM at Mrs Louis Aasen home in Arago. All members are invited to attend.
Community notes record a Sunday open meeting at Matswan with Arch bishop Howard of Portland delivering a sermon. Attendees include Mr and Mrs Tim Sullivan and children Mary Frances Dorney Coleer Mre Thomas Garrone wed nor Mra Jamee Walsh and Mr an Frank Young. Post-event activities included games and social visits with several local families and travelers returning from Portland and Salem.
McDuffee heading Coos County Fair board effort reports countywide entries and voting patterns Florence Sargent of Bandon leads county and Bandon entries. Donnas Rowley and Lee Curran of Marshfield follow. Ellen Shecket of Frnore and Lois Woowutt of Powers lead their communities. Betty Swigart of North Bend leads Coquille entries. Myrtle Point still forming. Contest opened July 31 and closes August 7 with final on September 14.
City residents can use the newly prepared tennis courts now. Courts feature backstops and improved surfaces after delays. Local church group reports the facilities are ready for public use.
Walter Favoury and Alfred C Gulstrom appeared Monday Aug 2 before Justice E F A Dodge on a charge of drunkenness. They were fined 25 with 9 15 suspended.
At a city council meeting a traffic ordinance was approved allowing the city to retain fines instead of sending them to the state. The balance of installments on property assessments is due and the recorder was directed to proceed with foreclosures. Plans and estimates for a city pumphouse were submitted by T E Dickson.
The third annual 4 H club livestock tour for TM Douglas Coos and Curry counties runs Monday and Tuesday August 9 and 10 in Coos county. George H Jenkins county agent says several farms will be visited for livestock judging and management instruction. A 4 H team of three to four members plus a leader will participate, with parents invited.
Examiner Ward McReynolds will be in Myrtle Point at city hall on Thursday August 12 from 10 am to 5 pm for those seeking driving permits or licenses to contact him during the session.
The third annual homemakers camp for Coos county women was held at Croft's Lake July 21 with 28 campers and over 0 guests. Weather was perfect with sunny days and ocean winds as groups enjoyed singing, swimming, boating, crafts, nature photography, and a one act play. Local attendees included Mrs. Dean Brown, Mrs. Stanley Evans, and several Myrtle Point residents.
A wedding took place Friday at 9 o clock on July 9 1987 with Dr T M White officiating at the minister's home. The couple William and partner plan residence in Myrtle Point.
The Myrtle Grange held a well attended meeting on Tuesday August 3 with farmers busy haying and canning. Plans were laid to staff the booth at the County Fair this fall. Lawrence Rackleff discussed sharing Bonneville dam power benefits with common people. A canta loupe feed followed, enjoyed by all, with refreshment plans set for the next gathering.
