Picket by Powers Women Urges Highway Improvements
A group of Powers women formed a Monday morning picket on Highway 31 between Myrtle Point and Powers to press for road upgrades. They halted traffic briefly, carried signs, and reported good driver support while planing ongoing demonstrations until action is taken. Leaders cited hazards on Highway 242 with dropoffs and cracks, notes on log truck usage, and the long medical access distances for Powers residents in need of doctors or hospital care. Jointly present were Mrs. Robert McCray Mrs. James Clauson Mrs. Donnie Fry and Mrs Wilber Merchen.

Employment Gains Seen Across South Coast in March
Edward J. Konka of the Coos Bay OSS Office reports March saw upward trends in most sectors apart from construction. Lumber and wood products added jobs, travel and food service rose year over year, and longshoring stayed busy though future levels depend on April port negotiations. Weather and housing starts could lift contract construction. wholesale and retail trade stayed solid. Seafood processing was helped by crab, shrimp and bottom fish activity, with a new Bay Area processor hiring about 40 pickers and 20 cutters.
