Coos and Curry County Fair Opens Amid Mixed Weather

The sixth annual Coos and Curry county fair opened with improved prospects as weather cleared. Exhibits at the pavilion grew stronger with notable livestock entries and enhanced quality, while racing results included events in the 2:25 class and other purses. Judges from Oregon Agricultural College arrived to assess exhibits and award premiums.

The Flanagan & Bennett Bank Myrtle Point branch is sold to a syndicate led by J A Black of Gardiner Oregon. Included are R C Dement Chas Hall John D Goss A E Adelsperger and W J Conrad of Marshfield. Black plans to move here and take charge of the bank.

Red Cross Tightens Law Against Insignia Ads

Washington reports the American Red Cross will strictly enforce laws prohibiting commercial use of its insignia. Violations have increased with novelty pins badges and other items marketed during the recent publicity drive. Publishers also ignored the law for cover designs and magazines.

Early Signs Indicate Good Fall Enrollment at Oregon

Eugene, Sept 8. Registrar A R Tiffany reports strong fall enrollment outlook for the University of Oregon as classes begin October 1. Responses from last year’s students show six who expect to return for each one undecided or not returning, with both men and women planning to continue education next term. Applications from new freshmen are nearly as many as at this time last year despite a later opening.

War wedding tonight in Portland for Coos County couple

Miss Leta Mast of Coquille to wed Earl E. Leslie of the Hospital Corps stationed at Vancouver Barracks. The ceremony will be held quietly in Portland with few relatives. Both were University of Oregon students and Mr. Leslie was famed as a top Coos County high school football player.

The Morehouse home on the North Fork of the Coquile river hosted a quiet double wedding. Miss Lela Morehouse wed W E Lehmanowsky of Powers and Miss Lyda Morehouse wed MccKinley Morley, with Elder Thomas Barklow officiating. Lehmanowsky will live in Powers. Morley remains at the Morehouse ranch.

A North Powers garden produced a single hill of potatoes containing fifty nine large tubers suitable for table use. The harvest filled a ten pound lard bucket and is claimed to be a remarkable yield for Coos county.

Professor H P Barss of Oregon Agricultural College warns Western Oregon apple trees face a serious anthracnose outbreak last winter with possible spread this fall. Eugene Ore Sept 7 Attorney General Brown rules that the Extension Division of the University of Oregon may legally offer extension class work outside the state to serve enlisted men at Vancouver Barracks who are citizens of Oregon. The Army Y M C A builds at Vancouver Barracks and Fort Stevens to provide extension courses if there is demand. The University cooperates and will respond fully to both requests.

Labor Day Speech in Olympia Calls for Abolishing Unearned Incomes

W H Kaufman of Bellingham spoke at Olympia Labor Day under the labor council, urging abolition of unearned incomes and criticizing liberty loan bonds as a disgrace to America. He argued taxes should fund war and condemned Congress for declaring war without public consent.
