Robbers Blast Gardiner Mill Safe For Big Loot
Gardiner Oregon Aug 31 safe blowers robbed the Gardiner Mill Company late Sunday night securing about 2000 dollars in cash and 600 to 1000 dollars in jewelry. Three men believed experts used nitro glycerine left behind tools from the mill shop. One guard stood watch as Mrs Andrews aboard the Juno eyed a bandit. Sheriff Quine and Gage alerted. no definitive clue.

Orvil Dodge Pioneer of Myrtle Point Dies at 75
Orvil Ovando Dodge, longtime Myrtle Point resident, died August 30 1914 at his daughter Mrs Carter's home in Myrtle Point after a year of illness. Born January 5 1839 in Gerard PA he lived across Ohio Illinois Indiana California and Oregon. A veteran of the First Oregon Cavalry he later ran a drug store and a general store, edited the West Oregonian at Myrtle Point, served as United States Court Commissioner and Receiver of Public Moneys, and helped found the Salmon Mountain Coarse Gold Mining Company. He left a large family including children Lydia Jane Hawley Dora Willard Edgar Willard Alta Carter Daisy Deyoe and Norman Ovando plus 27 grandchildren.

Pioneer Editor Orvil Dodge Funeral in Myrtle Point
Funeral services for Orvil Dodge were held at the M E church at 2:00 PM, led by Rev E Sutton Mace. Remains laid to rest in Myrtle Point cemetery. GAR members attended in a body with six pallbearers, honoring a leading pioneer of Southwestern Oregon.

Boy Has Broken Ankle At South Fork Plowing Site
James Lewis, a teen laborer for Smith Powers on the South Fork, fell from a trestle and broke both bones above the ankle last Friday. His father, also a company worker, defends safety efforts and says if blame is due it rests with him, not the firm.

Teachers Institute Closes After County Convention
The teachers institute ended last Friday with teachers, professors, and school board members returning home. State Superintendent J A Churchill spoke Thursday on The Safeguard of American Liberty. Friday’s Convention Day drew delegates from remote parts of the county to discuss school taxes, holidays observance, and contracting teachers for short terms.

Monument with Unusual Epitaph Erected by Medford Executor
F W Wait of Medford arrived to raise granite monuments from a Jackson County quarry. One stone bears a long epitaph praising “an independent good looking old bachelor” who chose single life over marriage. The inscription includes depictions of a Jordan River scene with three old maids and references to William Hartley the eccentric bachelor who died recently, with J R Benson acting as executor.

Death of Newt Bigelow in California Accident
Newton E. Bigelow died on August 15 1914 near his home two miles from Madero California. He was accidentally killed when a derrick toppled while he helped a neighbor stack lumber and was trapped beneath the lumber. He lived about an hour after the accident. He leaves a wife and baby boy at Madero a father two sisters and two brothers in Coos county and a brother in Northern California. Born January 1 1881 near Atwater Merced County California he confessed his Savior August 4 1911 and married Grace Ferruson June 5 1912. He was loved and honored by all who knew him.
