Disaster at sea South Portland lost off Blanco Reef
The steamer South Portland with 14 passengers and 32 crew struck Blanco reef at 5 pm Monday in dense coastal fog and foundered. Seven of 18 aboard the lifeboat survived. a raft carrying 11 was later rescued with one death. 17 remain missing, including two women. The iron ship, 185 feet, formerly the Caro line Miller, faced a history of wrecks and fires before this final disaster.

Bandits Raid Bank of Newberg Vault Blow Attempt
For two hours Monday morning a gang tried to blow open the Bank of Newberg vault and loot deposits in Newberg Yamhill county. Dynamite failed to breach the steel vault, the trio fled on horseback toward Portland, leaving the brick building damaged but insured.

Walter Wyland Captured After Medford Saloon Shootout
Walter Wyland, the man who fired at the Nash saloon in Medford while intoxicated, was arrested Wednesday by Sheriff Rader and E W Carver.
