Ballot Flaws Found in Coos County Election Ballot

Local officials report multiple ballot errors in Coos County including missing counties, misspelled month date, misprinted candidate names and misarranged Supreme Court listings. Judge Hall and County Clerk advised printing new ballots and officials in Salem corrected the arrangement to an alphabetical order.

Water Permits Issued in Quarter Ended Sept 30 1914

State Engineer John H. Lewis issued 173 water permits in the quarter ending September 30 1914. The permits cover about 3 million dollars in proposed work including 230 miles of canal 30 40 horsepower developments and irrigation of 13100 acres. F. E. Westerburg of the 55-15-Cent Store reports local access to abundant European and American holiday goods despite war disruptions. He says shipments through the Panama Canal are arriving, allowing ninety percent of orders to be filled. The 1914 season should offer good values with added higher end items and a push for Made in U. S. A. goods in 1915.

Changes to Second Homestead and Desert Land Entries

An act approved September 6 1914 broadens eligibility for second homestead and desert land entries. It allows those who previously lost or abandoned entries to qualify as if the former entry had never occurred, upon proving to the Interior Secretary the prior circumstances.

Coos County shows 6,000 growth in five years with a 1914 population of 23,181, while 1910 was 17,959. Curry County up about 800 to 2,823. Douglas County down about 200. Pert Boone Dies After Logging Accident in Sumner

Charles Luther Boone known as Pert was fatally struck by a falling timber at Walt Lawhorn’s logging camp near Sumner. He died at nine P.M. after being injured about four P.M. He was 22, eldest son of Thomas N. and Carrie E. Boone. Funeral services were held at the Sumner Baptist Church with Rev. Thos. Barklow delivering the rites.
