Ship Collision Near Portland Halts Shaver Tragedy
At about 2:15 a.m. the O. R. & N. Co. steamer T. J. Potter collided with the Transportation Company's G. W. Shaver en route Portland from Clatskania. The Shaver sank in 12 feet of water within minutes. Potter sustained minor damages. Despite 25 aboard many women and children slept in cabins and bunks, no lives were lost. Most evacuees were nearly unclad on escape in darkness and fog. In Oakland Bax Francisco on Oct 17 troop movement from Camp Merriam to Manila began with 800 men boarding the steamer Senator. The Third battalion of the Twenty-third infantry recruits for the Second Oregon and battery D, California heavy artillery, marched to the Pacific street dock arriving at 11.
