North Bend Carnival Celebrates Coos Bay Rail Link

Coos Bay Oregon October festivities mark the completion of the Willamette Pacific Railroad bridge across Coos Bay. A marine parade opened the event with Miss Goldie Riggs as carnival queen. A Good Roads Convention featured speeches by officials including Chas Hall and Judge James Watson. The centerpiece was the 25-mile auto races won by Percy Philips on Friday and Will Knowlton on Saturday. A high school student escaped serious harm when his car rolled after hitting hay bales placed to shield him at the turn.

Marshfield Jurist Seeks Reelection on Republican Ticket

Judge John S. Coke of Marshfield, serving a short term in place of Judge Skipworth, announced plans to run again for the bench on the Republican ticket. Appointed eight years ago by Governor Chamberlain, Coke has been re-elected once and serves in the second judicial district covering Lane, Douglas, Benton, Lincoln, Coos, and Curry counties. He is highly regarded by the Lane county bar and local attorneys praise his sound decisions and excellent record.

Death of John Wagner in Powers Oregon

John Wagner son of John L. and Mary E. Wagner died Tuesday October 2 at Emergency Hospital after a brief illness from a severe jaw and throat infection linked to an ulcerated tooth. He aided a rescue crew near Powers before falling ill. Born May 18 1885 in Rural he married Anna L Logan in February 1911 who died later that year. Survived by parents ten siblings and five brothers and four sisters. Funeral Wednesday at the Church of the Brethren with Rev. Thos. Barklow. burial Myrtle Point cemetery.

Prominent Minister of Saints Church Dies

Elder T. W. Chatburn former district church leader dies October 2 at Independence Missouri of heart trouble aged seventy four. He served over forty years as a gospel minister and twenty years as a missionary for the Re organized Latter Day Saints. He leaves a wife three sons and four daughters. His son F J Chatburn resides in this city. He was long associated with Joseph Smith and was a close friend of the church’s Prophet. He enlisted in the 29th Iowa in 1863 and later served as sheriff of Harlan County Iowa. His memory is honored by Samuel Wood in Western World.

Government Crop Report Shows U S Production and Prices

Washington October 7 1915 crop estimates from the Bureau of Crop Estimates list state and United States figures for wheat oats potatoes barley and apples with October 1 prices to producers. Key figures include U S wheat 1 000 000 000 bushels and oats 1 520 000 000 bushels with prices around 34 to 76 cents per bushel, apples at 2 55 per barrel and other cornucopia data across states.

Fair attendance at Good Roads meeting in Grange Hall

A fair sized crowd gathered at the Grange Hall in the Lundy building last Saturday to hear H. B. Burrell United States Senior Engineer and I. E. Cantine State Highway Engineer discuss road building. Cantine outlined statewide efforts while Burrellid led a general discussion and welcomed suggestions for county projects through federal Good Roads cooperation.

District Attorney asserts Sunday closing law valid again

The district attorney states the Sunday closing law is valid and enforceable, though neglected for fifty years. He will pursue prosecutions if complaints and evidence are provided, otherwise he considers himself no more responsible than any citizen.

Lutsey and Lambert to Stage Return Wrestling Match

Local fans who saw the wrestling contest between M. E. Eitses of Langlois and George Lambert of Powers last month at the Oaks Pavilion will recall the evenly matched bout. A return match is set for next Saturday evening at the Unique Theatre with a 8:00 p m start. The Powers logger is favored by some to win again, while both contestants claim they can win by lawful means under Police Gazette rules. Preliminary to the wrestling, two reels of movies will be shown at the Unique.

Football Opener In Coos County Friday Afternoon

The 1915 season opens with Coquille High School meeting the local high school team Friday afternoon on the home grounds. Myrtle Point Coquille and Marshfield are the only other schools on the schedule, each with two home games. Admission costs 25 and 35 cents.

Joint freight rates arranged to Portland through Marshfield

Southern Pacific HQ Portland reports plan to route freight via North Pacific Railway Co to Coos Bay region including Coquille Myrtle Point Bandon Powers and other points on the Coos Bay Roseburg Eastern line through Marshfield replacing the Breakwater steamer. Breakwater out of service due to costly repairs. tariffs to be filed with the State Railroad Commission with possible expedited approval.

High School Entertainment Delights Attendees

A school supper and performance drew a large crowd with three playlets Union Depot Bugtown Band and A Movie Stunt plus intermission songs including When I Was a Dreamer and You Was My Dream. Students reportedly raised about $60. Next show planned for later in October around Halloween.

Oregon Agricultural College gains 25 in opening enrollees

Corvallis Oregon sixteen hundred seventy four students enrolled during the 21 days allowed for matriculation up from last year's period by 25. Among them 1107 men and 567 women. The list includes 31 graduate students from ten institutions including Cornell UC Berkeley Stanford KU Iowa and Washington State. Every Oregon county represented and students come from 32 states plus Alaska Hawaii India China Japan and Scotland.
