Washington reports Dr L J Lee a leading government astronomer announces the Leonide meteoric shower will not occur this season but will pass Earth’s orbit for two years. He predicts a spectacular display mid November 1900 with a feeble current shower compared to 1799 and 1863.
The U S senate committee led by Senator Mason resumed its inquiry into food adulteration with Dr Edward H Jenkins of the Connecticut agricultural experiment station testifying that cheap goods are driving adulteration higher. He cited glucose and starch pastes in jellies and cheap coffee mixtures containing Canada peas and chicory among other adulterants. AlsoPhiladelphia reports arrest of Sameel Salton Lieutenant Joseph Rodgers and Clarence Messer on $1900 bail for conspiring to falsify election returns in Washington and Philadelphia with accusations of repeaters and impersonated election officers.
The Northern Pacific issues a circular touting Washington timber resources with bold illustrations and data. Reports show nine year rail shipments of dressed lumber climbing from 100 million feet in 1890 to 8 billion in 1898 across routes into Washington, highlighting extraordinary tree sizes and timber values. Oregon lumber firms, new mills, and road developments in Dawson and Skagway feature alongside Everetts modernizing industrial growth.
Bradstreet reports sustained price strength across textiles raw and manufactured with gains in raw cotton wool and hemp. Wool prices rise though volumes shrink.
