Oregon Pioneer Abernethy Helps Found Oregon
Aged pioneer Abernethy of Dora County traced his family’s 1439 wagon and canal voyage from Illinois to New York and around the Horn to the Columbia River. He and his parents arrived by ship in 1840 and helped establish early Oregon governance with his father serving as provisional governor from June 1845 to March 1849. General Joseph Lane then assumed duties as the territorial governor the next day.
