Portland anti tobacco drive unites schools and merchants

Willamette Glee Club Delights Pacific Coast Audiences

The Willamette University Glee Club of 15 hand picked singers charmed a Washington High School audience Monday night with encore after encore. Led by Frederic S. Mendenhall the group featured Estudiantina When the Corn Is Waving Away Away Ode to Willamette Old University and more with humorist Percy Reigleman and notable violin and clarinet numbers. The club performs in Oregon City and Independence before returning to Willamette University.

Cannery Stockholders Re-Elect Same Board

At Myrtle Point Canning Co stockholders met at city hall. A larger attendance of Myrtle Point ranchmen gathered as shares were represented. They elected the old board of Carter Jones Roberts Jenkins and Michael unanimously and empowered directors to sell the plant to trustee Lundy or any buyer to assume all debt.

Innocent Purchasers May Get New Lands

The Oregonian reports two federal decrees by Judge Robert S. Bean forfeiting 5000 acres of Oregon timber land from the Oregon & California railroad grant. 3500 acres in Coos and Douglas counties go to the government. 1500 acres in eastern Clackamas county go to the government. Both purchases may be repurchased by the claimants at $2.50 per acre under the Innocent Purchaser Act of August 20, 1912.

Government struggles to award star route contracts

Press reports say the Post Office faces difficulty awarding contracts for carrying rails on star routes due to low compensation. Bids were largely rejected as weights rose with parcel post enlargements. Western routes suffer from higher mail weights and costs, forcing contractors to add horses and wagons and shifting work from express to contractors.
