Oregon Railroads Report Shows Revenue Gains in 1913

The Oregon railroad commission’s year end 1918 figures show total operating revenue of 14.87 million dollars, with freight and passenger income dominating. Net operating revenue tops 8.63 million. taxes reduce net to 8.63 million and the state’s electric lines yield strong returns despite tax costs. The report notes 3278 miles of track, 426 electric, and 64 new steam miles plus 47 new miles in operation. It discusses rate making principles, accuracy over guesswork, and the commission’s workload including 226 utility lines under its jurisdiction and a rise in informal and formal complaints across rail and utilities.

Partridges Released In Coos County Range

Deputy Warden J M Thomas and a state game crew brought six pairs of Hungarian partridges from the Bay. Some birds were freed on Coos Bay shore, others in Fairview district, and the remainder in the Cement Bros range on the South Fork.

Word arrived last week that Capt Russell Panter of Myrtle Point Transportation Co earned the Myrtle Point to Coquille via Norway and Arago mail contract through June 30 1918. Capt T W Panter holds the Coquille to Bandon route contract for the same period.

Acorns Start Early This Year At Floral Creek Ranch

Wm Chandler brought acorn twigs to headquarters showing early growth on oaks from the Hi Stanford ranch on Floral Creek in Curry county across Catching Creek. He notes this is the earliest he has seen acorns, about three months premature, suggesting climate keeps some trees from dormancy.

Marshfield merchant F S Dow dies by suicide at bay

F S Dow a Marshfield commission merchant and leading Coos Bay business figure, ended his life by jumping from Ocean Dock into the bay. A note to Auditor Allen and three other letters were found. inquest returned death by drowning amid personal crisis and temporary mental aberration. Dow founded a major wholesale produce business and held posts with several San Francisco firms. He was born May 27, 1870, married Emma Diment in 1895, and leaves three children. Funeral Sunday at the family home. body to be shipped to National City, California.

Death of G Fist John Gribble Coos County Resident

G Fist John Gribble aged 53 died in Bandon Oregon after a week of pneumonia. He was born November 17 1861 in Slackams County and lived in Coos County since 1873. He worked in furniture and box manufacturing in Coquille and later moved to Mexico before returning to Oregon. He leaves six sons Albert John Frank Joseph Arthur Donald and a daughter Mrs J Smith. Funeral services were held in Coquille and burial planned at Bancroft Cemetery with a large local attendance. Burial today planned at Bancroft Cemetery. Corvallis Odd Fellows plan a three story temple.

Postponed Myrtle Point Cannery Stockholders Meeting

The Myrtle Point Cannery Company stockholders scheduled a meeting for Saturday at City Hall to decide on selling the plant or raising funds. Mortgage holder R. B. Carman has started foreclosure, and negotiations with F A Turner to take the plant collapsed. Some stockholders favor a stock assessment to pay debts, others seek funds to operate the season.

Christian Church Notes Temperance Day Plans

The Christian Church reports large attendances for Lord's Day services with five additions this week including two conversions and three baptisms. Albro and Drain Wed at Dr. Johnsons Residence

Frank Oliver Albro and Mary Cathrine Drain were quietly married on Wednesday morning March 11 at ten o'clock at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Leslie G. Johnson. Rev. W. S. Williams of the First Presbyterian church performed the ceremony. The couple will reside in Myrtle Point.
