The Rio Grande area near El Paso suffered levee breaks on Fourth and Fort streets allowing floodwaters to inundate about 75 houses along the riverfront within minutes. An emergency wave force moved residents to higher ground as two miles of a new levee were built to redirect water back to the river. By 10:30 PM the reserve levee failed near Fourth Street, threatening the city center and leaving hundreds homeless and many without food.
A runaway freight crashed into a westbound passenger train at American Falls Idaho near Pocatelle on May 81. Nine killed and eight seriously injured as both engines and cars were wrecked.
