Elks Draw Largest Crowds in Bandon Celebration

The Bandon by the Sea Elks Day drew the town’s biggest crowd, with bands, parades, vaudeville stunts, a mock wedding, and a wrestling show. The Marshfield and Coos Bay contingents arrived by river and rail, entertainers staged on Gatchell wagons, and a ball on the beach capped a day of festivities for about two to three thousand residents and visitors.

Washington reports a new post office established at Powers in Coos county with Gustavus Brown named the first postmaster today. The development marks a formal setup for local mail service.

Farmers Exchange Sales Day Draws Large Crowd

The third monthly Farmers Exchange Sales Day drew more townspeople than the prior events as horses dominated the offerings. Auctioneer Mr. Rouse oversaw private sales and one buyer Asa Tomlinson of Kangas acquired several animals. the next sale is set for Wednesday August 25 with a 15 cent lunch and cooked foods in the Pike building.

J. C. Brown Residence Destroyed by Fire

Last Tuesday night the residence of Marshal J. G. Brown burned after a late discovery by Wm. Abbey. Firefighters saved some furniture but the house and contents valued at about 3000 dollars were gutted, with 1500 dollars of insurance. The origin remains a mystery as the kitchen stove had no usage that day.

South Fork Beats Myrtle Point In Open Air Baseball Clash

South Fork topped Myrtle Point 12 to 10 in a Sunday afternoon exhibition near Roby Shull's pasture. A crowd of over a hundred watched as South Fork built a big lead before Myrtle Point narrowed the gap late. Dairyman's Ball Set for August 7 at Oaks Pavilion

The Dairyman's Second Annual Ball will be held Saturday evening, August 7, at the Oaks Pavilion in Myrtle Point. The event is hosted by the Coille Valley and Myrtle Point Cooperative Testing Associations. A twelve piece orchestra from Sumner Oregon will provide music and dancing for prizes is planned. At 10 30 during a 15 minute intermission a series of stereoptical views will be shown.

Obituary for Arthur Fisher of Coos County

Arthur Fisher born September 23 1871 in Upper Musexodoboit Halifax County Nova Scotia died July 20 1915 at Mercy Hospital North Bend Oregon from stomach trouble after five months illness during which he underwent two operations. He lived in New England before moving to Coos county six years ago working for his brother H W Fisher then farming the Bartlett place on Catching Creek. He leaves a wife and a two year old daughter. Funeral services were held July 21 at the Presbyterian church with Rev E Sut ton Mace of the M E church presiding.

Dr M G Pohl Seeks Heathful Change in California

Coos Bay Times reports Dr M G Pohl of Bandon traveled to California aboard the steamer Speedwell. He plans to visit San Diego for health baths and climate, with stay length to depend on local response. A German native, he is among Coos county s oldest pioneers.

Longtime Coos County Resident Dr Pohl Recounts Life Travels

The article notes Dr Hermann and Dr Pohl arriving in Coos County in 1859 making him a 56 year resident. It describes his travels across the United States Asia Minor South America and other regions. Pohl practiced as an optician in Myrtle Point and later lived near North Bend and Bandon. He served as Coos County fruit inspector for years before resigning and faced wartime family losses as 28 nephews fought for Germany with some killed and unclear fortunes of others.

Dr J L Masson reports from Reno Nevada that Chas W Foster and Eureka won their Friday races. Hodges recently entered big events for the first time since 1909 with rider Pedro Enos. Hodges paid thirty four dollars for every two dollars wagered on his chances to win.

Johnson Hall: New University of Oregon Admin Building Completed

The University of Oregon in Eugene reports Johnson Hall finished and ready for occupancy by autumn. Departments moving in include Geology Mathematics Greek Public Speaking and others under the College of Letters and Science. The building will host the Guild Hall auditorium and host events, with a cornerstone ceremony planned in autumn attended by state residents.

Dairymen Hold Attendance at Coos and Curry Meetings

State dairy and food officials M. S. Schrock and G. H. Fullenwider with County Agriculturist J. L. Smith led dairy meetings across Coos and Curry counties. At Myrtle Point the all day event under the Myrtle Point Grange drew thirty to forty dairy men and wives. Schrock spoke on breeding feeding housing and tuberculin testing. Smith collected herd testing requests. Fullenwider addressed dairy sanitation. a Grange dinner preceded questions and a note on the O C grant lands.

Tomlinson visit paths through Catching Creek home

Asa Tomlinson and family arrived Monday from Kansas to stay with F O Tomlinson at Catching Creek. Mr Tomlinson plans to buy a carload of horses for shipment east. Nearby, Menley Barklow’s wagon overturns on a hillside load of wood, sparing injury with minor damages. C W Nelson sells furniture and plans to move to Portland for his wife's health, then to Southern California. Myrtle Point Mercantile Co. leases the Pike building to relocate clothing and shoes after remodeling.
