All Oregon Week at the Frisco Exposition

The Oregon building hosts All Oregon Week from August 9 to 11 with daily programs. Oregon bands, dignitaries, dances, and special exhibits will highlight activities and exports including a clam bake, mineral water day, and fireworks. Loganberry day and a grand finale honoring S. Benson are planned.

Water Permits Issued in Coos County June Quarter 1915

State Engineer records show 196 water permits for the quarter ending June 30 1915 including 9 for reservoir storage. Total project cost 734000 dollars covers 248 miles of canals serving 21164 acres and 4264 horsepower. In Coos county the Bandon Power Company seeks 500 horsepower from Spring Creek. Alfred Johnson Lumber Company requests domestic and manufacturing use from McKee Gulch. T M Stover et al plan domestic supply from springs in section unnamed township 39 south range 12 west.

Barrow Opposes Profit Motive in Oregon California Land Grant

Coquille July 19 1919 C R Barrow publishes an opinion in response to Iron Governor Withycombe on the Oregon California land grant dispute. He argues against an extra legislative session and rejects state or federal sale or speculation of timbered lands, urging sales to actual settlers at 2.50 per acre and asserting the railroad cannot profit from public lands.

Brakes Fail On Steep Coos Bay Grade Crash Narrow Escape

On a long grade to the Seven Devils in Coos Bay the brakes failed while a car driven by L E Brown struggled to stop. Alva and Mrs. Doll jumped out as the vehicle rolled back and tipped on its side after slipping brakes. No injuries occurred and the party continued after the machine was righted. Mr Brown and Mrs Brown are well known in the area.

Forest fires warning urges prevention of careless escapes

Barrow Calls for Land Grants to People Over Land Speculators

Barrow criticizes Governor Withycombe's stance on the Oregon and California Railroad land grant. He urges distributing 160 acres per individual to empower families, support education, and counter timber sharks and land barons. Willamette Pacific celebration planned by Coos Bay group

North Bend Chamber of Commerce fixed October 8 and 9 for the Willamette Pacific railroad celebration with a seven member committee led by Dr Ira Bartle to organize events. Other items include a crash of the steam schooner Yellowstone into Coos Bay bridge cofferdam causing $2500 damage and no injuries. Exports from the US reach 724 million dollars for eleven months ending June 1, due to the war.

Fire at Depot Scratches Roof After Train Sparks

The first fire of the season occurred last Saturday forenoon on the roof of the local depot. Sparks from passing trains had scorched the depot in summers past. The blaze opened a hole in the shingles before being extinguished. Mr. Collier, the company carpenter, re shingles the burned area earlier this week.

City Council Targets Auto Noise With New Ordinance

The city council approved an ordinance to curb auto noises including horn blasts and night joyrider singing. Violations carry a fine of five to fifty dollars. Other measures include cement walks on Spruce Street and a second reading for Spruce Street improvements. The council also addressed right of way for water system expansion and a sewer project survey cost pending reimbursement.

Contracts Set for $18 000 School House at Powers

W S curpin of Marshfield reports bids were opened at Powers for the 18000 school building. H E Shelley of Coquille wins the erection contract, D A Savage of Powers gets the planning, Schroeder and Hildebrand of Marshfield take the heating plant, and Langworthy of Marshfield handles the electric wiring.

Big Timber Deal Nears Closing in Oregon Sale

A Portland Evening Telegram report states a large timber tract of about 12 000 acres in Lincoln County near Coos Bay is to transfer title this week. The sale, led by E J Young of Madison Wisconsin, involves creditors trustees of C A Smith Lumber Co with headquarters in Minneapolis. Final payment is expected soon as buyers and sellers close the deal.

South Fork defeats Bridge 10 to 4 at Bridge marking their third win in the summer series. Four scoreless innings with Bridge errors and standout play by South Fork players Bull Couey Hoffman J Coue Warner Dye Parry Whobesy and Epperson led to the victory as Umpire Carl officiated.

Lambert Defeats Martin In Wrestling Match At Unique Theatre

George Lambert of Powers defeated Frank Martin known as the wrestling door black in two falls. Lambert won the first fall in 17 minutes 45 seconds by half Nelson and body scissors and the second in 2 minutes 50 seconds with a body lock. A rematch between Jim Wilson and Lambert was announced but postponed until after Lambert wrestles Lutsey at the 1915 County Fair.
