Close Call Aground Off Oregon Coast Crickets Rescued
The steam schooner Cricket ran aground about 1000 feet from shore near Jarvis landing in thick fog. Jolanda the fishing tug and gas schooner Rustler aided with lines and anchors while Bee also lent help from North Bend. The Cricket, bound from Port Angeles to San Pedro with lumber, lightened its deck by jettisoning cargo and returned to deep water on flood tide. Captain Wehman sent his wife and two daughters and two other relatives to safety as life boats evacuated them after the vessel floated. The Coos Bay station rescued the passengers and sealed the incident as calm despite rare smooth seas along the Oregon coast.
