Three young women join as missionaries, with plans to reside on Rosale and the Caroline group to establish schools and kindergarten work among the natives. Senate approves wool schedule ad valorem on third class wool

Washington reports the senate finished the wool schedule for manufactured woolen goods after debate on effect of rates. Quay pressed for ad valorem rates on third class wool but lost 19 to 41. Committee rates set four cents per pound for third class wool valued at 10 cents or less and seven cents for third class wool valued above 7 cents per pound.

Pension bill would aid Oregon and Washington Indian War survivors

A general bill to amend an act granting pensions to survivors of Indian wars is reported. Senator McBride introduced the measure for the Oregon and Washington wars of 1847 and 1856, noting the veterans are on average 15 years older than Civil War vets and deserve government bounty. The Cayuse and Mexican war survivor figures are analyzed, with estimates of living survivors and widows among Oregon and Washington territory volunteers and militia.

Insurgent Defeat Reported in Cuban Engagement

From Havana reports Colonel Guerte rea with a column of troops and local guerilla forces clashed with insurgents led by Aranguerea near Madrugas. The fight lasted from 3 PM to 7 PM with 10 rebels killed and 1 Spanish officer plus 15 soldiers wounded. Spanish forces dislodged the insurgents and burned their camp.

In London the foreign office secretary said no decision has been made on Japan or Hawaii annexation. The Hawaii revenue surplus is cited at 989,627.36 for the year. Edward Dean Cooke, US congressman from Iowa, was found dead in his hotel room in Washington. A report of armed bandits near Leadville and a public hanging in Fayetteville are also noted.
